can you explain?

Spoilers for comics?

If I remember the story correctly Hawkeye had a family and Black Widow killed them.

That was only in the Ultimate comics. They dated for a bit and are now pretty good friends in the regular 616 universe.

There's a shitload of incredibly stupid crap in the comics that thankfully didn't make it into the movies. That's probably why I'm enjoying the movies so much.

[identity profile] hermione-vader.livejournal.com 2012-02-11 09:30 pm (UTC)(link)
From what I've gleaned, I think that's why Ant-Man and Wasp were left out---their relationship had developed way too many issues over the years, so it would be hard to introduce them without touching on that, since I think they can't be introduced separately.

AYRT

I'd guess it was more screentime restraints and keeping the cast to a manageable size. Plus, it's not like the team's hurting for scientists or rich socialites.

They managed to introduce them in a cartoon aimed at ten-year-olds just fine, though. It wouldn't be difficult at all to focus only on the cute, fluffy-and-functional pre-Hank's mental illness manifesting part of their relationship, especially not in a movie that's set right when the Avengers were forming.

(Anonymous) 2012-02-12 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
Actually, it's because theoretically they're still working on an Antman movie and don't want it to clash.

[identity profile] luxshine.livejournal.com 2012-02-12 05:27 pm (UTC)(link)
you see, this makes me sad. I would've loved for Ant-Man and Wasp to be in the movie, and to finally get rid of all the "Hank Pym is an abuser!!!!" shit at least in ONE canon that was not primarily targeted to kids.

(Anonymous) 2012-02-11 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Have you seen the movie or something? Because you're making it sound like you Know For A Fact!!! that the movie will have some obvious fanservice for this pairing, regardless of the information that has actually been given to the public. That's a pretty big leap to make if you haven't seen the movie.

The movies are their own universe, the same way all comic book movies are. yes, they're based on the comic source but they're not direct adaptations. If something doesn't work in the comics, it might work in the film. If something works in the comics, it might be terrible onscreen. Constantly trying to compare the movies to the comics will probably just end up hindering your enjoyment of the films. They're their own separate canon. Nobody would try to say The Dark Knight and Batman And Robin are from the same universe. Hell, few people would try and say Batman Returns and Batman And Robin are from the same universe, even though technically they're supposed to be part of the same series. Just enjoy them for what they are.

That's what I was thinking. How the hell can the OP be so darn certain?

The movies are their own universe, the same way all comic book movies are. yes, they're based on the comic source but they're not direct adaptations.

THANK YOU. This could not be more true.

[identity profile] elspethdixon.livejournal.com 2012-02-11 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
IDK, early canon Clint/Natasha is still less full of potential unfortunate issues than West Coast Avengers Clint/Bobbi ("I know you say you were raped, but let's ask your supposed rapist for his side of the story?" Forget wanting a divorce - she should have broken Clint's nose with her escrima sticks. And I say this as someone who likes Clint).

Plus, their relationship is really hot and interesting in the EMH cartoon, despite being in a PG-rated cartoon aimed at kids. I wouldn't at all mind the movie pulling from that, especially since with both of them canonically SHIELD agents in movie-verse, that version of their relationship would work better than the original canon one.

(Anonymous) 2012-02-12 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
I've been following the comic books for years and I agree that Clint and Natasha are better as friends/partners than lovers. Buuuuuut I still ship them to some degree and I'll be glad if they hook up in the movie canon. I also doubt that Marvel editors will make changes to coincide with the movie.

(Anonymous) 2012-02-12 02:42 am (UTC)(link)
The movie hasn't even come out yet.

Fucking CHILL.

[identity profile] hako-neko.livejournal.com 2012-02-12 03:39 am (UTC)(link)
This pairing has "Pair the Spares" written all over it.

[identity profile] shadowpiranha.livejournal.com 2012-02-12 03:53 am (UTC)(link)
I doubt they're focusing an extreme amount on them, but I won't be surprised if they are. As far as universes are concerned movies and comics aren't even considered as happening in the same one, so "good" Hawkeye/Black Widow and "bad" Hawkeye/Black Widow can both happen. Whatever that even means.

But that's not the ship I care about, I was roped into shipping Tony/Cap only after I saw the overwhelming "evidence" in the comics and now I can't unsee it. That's actually an epic love story.

[identity profile] faithgrowsold.livejournal.com 2012-02-12 04:36 am (UTC)(link)
In a dream world, Darcy/Kat Dennings would be in the Avengers, and there would be actual substance to the Clint/Darcy ship ):

Black Widow/Winter Soldier FTW!

> pretending the comics are anything but the sort of kind of blueprint-ish thing for the movies

O U

[identity profile] its-still-talk.livejournal.com 2012-02-12 06:35 am (UTC)(link)
Eh, the movies are obviously in an universe of their own, the characters won't be exactly the same and neither will their relationships. And besides, you're entitled to dislike the ship, but we've barely seen anything of Black Widow in the movies and we haven't seen anything of Hawkeye, why don't you wait until you've seen them in action before making your decision on the ship in the movie!verse? Who knows, they might surprise you.

That said, Marvel can have all of my money if they make Natasha/Bucky happen in the movies. ALL. OF. IT.

[identity profile] redfiona99.livejournal.com 2012-02-12 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I can only suggest the mantra I use to cope with Ultimate X-men - it's a different universe and I will ignore the bits I don't like.

[identity profile] duckgirlie.livejournal.com 2012-02-13 05:13 am (UTC)(link)
I just don't want them to hook up because I'd love it if a superhero film managed to have a female hero who didn't end up shagging one of the male characters.
