Character and plot are good, but sometimes you just want a good, hot PWP. Nothin' wrong with that!

I like the quick and dirty ones, and I like the long and plotty ones. But just because a fic is short (and scorching hot) doesn't mean it can't be pitch-fucking-perfect for the characters.

I actually agree with you on this. Personally, when I write long fics, the sex is tacked on; I don't want to take the risk that people won't read it just because it has a PG-13 rating overall (and people tell me they do this, so I'm not overreacting.) I almost always think PWP provides a better fix for porn.

I've seen people say "under NC-17 fic is not worth reading" and it bums me out. I mean, to each their own, but the time with clothing on is just as important to me.

After some fics with a lot of buildup and then a confession-then-sex I'll end up skimming the sex because, hey, I got what I wanted. Characters are in their good places, don't really need to read about how fast hips are moving for the hundredth time. Just give me my x-time-later-we're-still-stupid-in-love epilogue.

Yeah, when I want porn, I don't particularly care for plot. Don't get me wrong; I love long plotty fics that tug at my heartstrings, but that's for reading and not for getting off.

I realize this is not true for everyone, but for me "fic I read for emotional fulfillment (seeing the characters get together, getting more of that canon, etc)" and "fics I read for porn" are in entirely different categories.

Second on how sex scenes that come at the climax (heh heh) or, depending on how plotty the fic is, the denouement, of a long romantic story full of UST and character development almost always feel tacked-on and fake and unrealistic. Especially as instead of the characters going "hey since we think we're in love with each other, lets have sex tonight, K?" they go for the kink-meme-style impromptu sudden segue into random sex in the middle of a totally un-sex-related scene. Which is fine in kink memes fills but makes no sense in long character-driven romantic stories.

I'm in total agreement there with you. Not to mention that a lot of the more plotty fics out there that happen to have porn it, almost use the porn just to entice you to read the story. Like, the promise of the porn is what's going to get you to keep going, rather than the actual plot and story.

Now, there are some good long!fics out there that have both good plot and porn, it just seems that they're few and far between.

But yeah, if I want to read some porn, then by golly I'm going to read some porn and that's when I'll seek out the PWPs.

I do the same too, especially if it's ikea porn, or just boring porn. PWPs actually get to the point holy christ. With those long fics, it's all like, "C'moooon already. Stop fucking around and get to the part where you pick up an actual sword and kill the bandits. *scrolls past*"
Seriously. Sometimes a good ol' fade to black is definitely more preferable.
