Why did you not just save the stories if you liked them so much? I mean, it's not like they'd never done it before.

I was in the middle of reading a story that had, like, 50 chapters (that's a lot to save) on LJ when the author deleted his/her journal. They didn't even leave any kind of warning. I literally clicked on the next chapter only to find out the rest of the story was gone.

Yeah. Sometimes you just don't see it coming.

That sucks, yeah. Is it not on the waybackmachine or anything? I found some really old fanfic that I loved through that after geocities went dark.

I tried. I can't ever get the waybackmachine to let me view deleted LJ pages.

I even tried using google cache but to no avail. :(

The author had a serious personal emergency, and you had to go find another fic instead of that one. Yeah, your life is so hard.

Actually, at one point I did end up printing out the story, only for it to be 190 pages. So, I have it in a binder somewhere, but that was only the first part! And there was no way I could print out another ~200 pages. ^^;

Plus at that time I didn't realize that it was possible to "save" webpages, which is what I do now when I can for fic. And at the time we didn't really have thumbdrives, or any sort of external things to save it too (I don't know if it was a "family finances" thing, or a "they don't exist!" thing), and my 'rents preferred that I didn't save things to the computer unless it was for school/work, as it was an old computer w/o a lot of memory, and five people on it, along with various edutainment games that they tolerated, but took up a lot of space as well. :/

Unfortunately, by the time I finally got my own computer/we got thumbdrives/etc. it was all gone. :/

YES! Before they started making all these fanfiction downloaders/savers and before I realized webpages could be saved (and stopped being paranoid I would download a virus, lol) I resorted to printing, too. It SUCKED. I left this one fandom for a few years (like 2 or 3, maybe) and when I came back to it I swear everything was gone! It was like half the fandom literally decided to just abandon ship and pull everything. You know how each fandom has their list of Classics, right? Well, when I returned to the fandom only about 1/4th of the classics were left.

Now I save pretty much EVERYTHING. I can honestly admit that I'm paranoid.

I save everything, but mostly because my Da used to turn the internet off at a certain time that I was just sure was too early, and I wanted to read my fanfic dammit! So I'd save it to my computer (as soon as I learned about it), and read it under cover with the lights off. It wasn't even porn, either, it was just... It was just fic. ^^;

Yeah! And it was the stories that introduced me to fandom, and it was epic and long and had OC's that I didn't hate! And that wasn't even the one I printed! The one I printed was 190 pages of AWESOME and it was a one shot, and it was beautiful, and then there was a separate set of stories in their own universe, and there is no way I could have afforded to print it. Plus the stories all included songs somehow, and I was introduced to so much new music!

(On the plus side, I decided to go and search for them in the hopes that maybe it's still somewhere, and I just found it! All of them! IDEC who posted them, I'm sorry, but I am saving them to my computer right now.)

You've just reminded me of the lengths I had to go to in order to save fic when I first got into fandom. I remember having a couple of binders of fic printed so small I could just about read it (to save paper!).

And yeah, things back then were a lot less spacious than they are now. My first laptop had a 4GB hard drive. It wouldn't even hold the files from one of my fandoms now. :/

Sorry for sounding kind of asshole-ish, too. It really sucks when good fic disappears on you.
