He doesn't really protect her, most of the time. He just stands by while she's being abused.

But that's still slightly less awful than participating in the abuse as the Kettleblacks did, which is probably why Sansa sees him as a warped sort of protector figure (well, that, and he saved her from the angry mob in King's Landing). It's not so much that he actually protected her all that much, but that what little protecting he did was more than anyone else was doing for Sansa at that point, so in her memory, he goes from being "the one member of the King's Guard who wasn't actively abusing me on Joffrey's orders" to "my protector."

Congrats to Sandor on being less of a despicable human being than the Kettlebacks and Joffrey? Gold star for doing the bare minimum?

But yeah, IA that Sansa romanticizes Sandor because she clung onto what little she had while she was in King's Landing. Plus, it's just in her personality to idealize things.

Sandor did everything he could to help her given how expendable he was.

Possibly.

But the weirdness of their relationship is that he's not doing it because he cares about her as a person. But she's pretty and young and weak and in need of his help, so this is all feeding into his warped idealization of knighthood and how he doesn't want to be a knight but he does.

I think the only characters in SoIaF who don't get the "congrats on being less of a despicable human being than Joffrey Lannister" gold star are Gregor Clegane, Reese Bolton, and the Bloody Mummers. It's a very low standard to meet.

(Yeah, she definitely romanticizes things, though by Storm of Swords I think it may be as much a form of coping mechanism as naivete, because it makes all the constant horror she's subjected to easier to deal with).

Exactly. You can see why she sees him as some sort of protector-sort (given her age, naivety, and terrible situation) but anyone who isn't an incredibly silly 13-year-old should be able to see why it's a bad match.

He did as much as he could without getting beheaded himself for intervening. Like when he went along with Sansa's lie about how it's bad luck to kill someone on your birthday to get Joffrey off her back. At one point he even speaks out of line and yells "Enough" when Joffrey's having her beaten.

And then there's rescuing her from getting gang-raped by the angry mob of course.
