It comes off as "you can do your thing as long as you keep it away from me because I'm not interested!!" which is why it's unfortunate. Also, I never said they had to be interested in gay people more than other people, but being interested in them and their rights the same amount would be common courtesy.

Hence, unfortunate. Because the OP was obviously not trying to say that.

That's not unfortunate, it's just human. For example, I hate being around political people. I don't mind being around them when they're not political, but I hate politics and don't want it in my life. They're welcome to do their thing, but I don't want to be part of it. I can easily imagine the same thing with other interests: religion, fandom, cheerleading, make up, zombies, RP, video games...

being interested in them and their rights the same amount would be common courtesy.

OP is interested in their rights. They don't have to be interested in the culture.
