Around half of my completed fics are never posted anywhere, since they're for small, inactive fandoms and wouldn't get any attention.

Oh. So when you post your fics in public archives, it's for active fandoms.

Where your stories would get attention.

So attention is something DESIRABLE. If you don't think you'll get it, you don't post it.

But you write for yourself.

Like I said, attention is a huge bonus, and I'd never pretend otherwise. But whether or not I think the story will get it, and whether or not I plan to post it anywhere, I still write the story. If the internet disappeared tomorrow and I could never share another fic with anyone ever again, I wouldn't stop writing.
