This.

I remember thinking "that's a cool concept, let's see, what actors..." and seeing Timberlake's name. I didn't bother again.

[identity profile] havemy-heart.livejournal.com 2012-02-16 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
I still haven't seen it. I thought the premise sounded cool and my boy Toby Hemingway is in it, so I'll probably see it anyway. My expectations for it aren't that high and it just has so many pretty people in it.

this is pretty much the best way to see it, tbh! I went into the theater with the absolute lowest expectations and ended up really enjoying it, poor writing and unrealized potential and all.

if you're not looking for much more than sci-fi action-heist-thriller mishmash featuring hot young Hollywood stars, then it's an entertaining watch! if you're expecting something on the same intellectual and thematic level as Andrew Niccol's past works (The Truman Show, S1m0ne, Gattaca), then...well, then you're kind of SOL, haha.

Toby in yet another movie that had potential to be better than it was.

(Anonymous) 2012-02-16 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
Seriously. The concept had so much potential! What happened, scriptwriters?

I did get to spend two hours watching Cillian Murphy swanning around in head-to-toe leather, though, so that's a plus.

[identity profile] its-still-talk.livejournal.com 2012-02-16 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
THIS. The idea of time as currency is incredibly interesting and has lot of potential, but I hated it the way Andrew Niccol decided to approach it. The "nobody grows older than 25" concept wasn't that great to begin with, and the uninspired plot and underwhelming cast definitely didn't help.

But it did look great, not so much because of the actors, but because of the production design and cinematography. At least you can always trust Andrew Niccol to deliver when it comes to that.

[identity profile] lit-wolf.livejournal.com 2012-02-16 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
I just watched it for the first time last week and I totally agree. The concept was really cool but everything else about it was just freaking dumb. I didn't care about the characters, and the story was so dull that I was having trouble following along.

[identity profile] ace-kay.livejournal.com 2012-02-16 02:04 am (UTC)(link)
This so hard. And if it wasn't for the bad dialogue and blatant plot holes, it could've been a decent movie.

[identity profile] valenciapilgrim.livejournal.com 2012-02-16 04:51 am (UTC)(link)
The bad time puns, OH THE PUNS!!! "Clean their clocks!" Ohhhh, no. At one point, I think it was Vincent K.'s character that said "Time is money!" I was like, NO SHIT! That is the premise of the entire movie!! I knew that much before the movie even started, damn it!

(Anonymous) 2012-02-16 02:04 am (UTC)(link)
I think they had too much concept to condense into 2 hours. I say this all the time but I think it'd be better if they'd been androids. Anyway, agreed OP!

[identity profile] steph313.livejournal.com 2012-02-16 03:37 am (UTC)(link)
My brother (who is a screenwriter) wrote a screenplay about the same concept--time currency--a year or so ago, and could not have been more annoyed at how this movie chose to handle it. Every time someone brought up the trailer, he would rant.

Thanks to this movie, he considers the idea old hat...which is sad.

[identity profile] djmayhem-aubrey.livejournal.com 2012-02-18 03:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Ugh, I can understand how you (and he) feel. My boyfriend is in a similar situation, only with superhero type movies. He wrote a screenplay years ago with the idea of regular people being tossed into the role of superhero, before Kick Ass, Megamind, Super, and even Chronicle (to an extent) came out, and he seems to have given up on his own screenplay because of the deluge of movies that have come out with similar premises.

[identity profile] spider-rogue.livejournal.com 2012-02-16 03:42 am (UTC)(link)
I enjoyed this movie even though it was kind of terrible, but yeah, I wish the universe had been executed better. Or it had just been two hours of Timberlake and Seyfried robbing banks. Alas. XD

[identity profile] lilweirdomokyn.livejournal.com 2012-02-16 04:50 am (UTC)(link)
I've only heard the Spill reviews of the movie, and those guys also said the movie had potential it never reached, so I can't say much about whether that opinion is a secret.

But I did recently watch trailers of it (I was trying to look for a song, and Trailer Addict usually lists music licensed to the trailers) and I agree that Amanda Seyfried looks adorable with the short cut. I've gotten so used to seeing her with blond curls I almost didn't believe it was her at first. I also want that black dress, really badly.

I'm not sure what the secret is here, unless all your friends adore this movie and can't deal with the fact that other people don't like everything they like...?

I haven't seen the movie, I suspected it would be like that, and pretty much everyone seems to agree with you.

Her hair is cute.

[identity profile] xelestri.livejournal.com 2012-02-16 05:30 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it was okay for a little bit, and the premise was interesting, but it really jumped all over the place and just went to shit fast. I even though Timberlake was a decent actor, and I liked the bleak future that seemed not-all-that-futuristic. The world seemed really fleshed out, but they backpedaled a lot and changed shit later in the movie that they'd established early on and so forth.

("We never steal time!" Later: "We need more time! Let's just take some!")

(Anonymous) 2012-02-16 05:34 am (UTC)(link)
The secret that reached out and spoke for thousands who were dissapointed that such an awesome plot had crappy execution. God damn did this movie lag after the first half hour. This could have been made into a trilogy or set up to have a sequel or something. Anything but what we got.

[identity profile] frostoria.livejournal.com 2012-02-16 06:02 am (UTC)(link)
This. It sounds like such a cool concept, and the visuals are really gorgeous (agreed on Amanda's hair), but then it turned into a jumble of typical Hollywood action and romance. Also, is it just me, or are their actions at the end very illogical? We already saw that having more time/money will result in destruction (like what happened with Johnny Galecki's character), so basically what they did by robbing banks and distributing time to people is create more chaos.

[identity profile] raccoons.livejournal.com 2012-02-16 07:51 am (UTC)(link)
I liked it.

I mean, I definitely saw its flaws while I was watching it, but I just took it as over-the-top silly fun. And I wasn't expecting the whole outlaw couple angle when my friend told me about it, so that was a fun surprise too.

Certainly not the best thing ever written, but not the worst either.

(Anonymous) 2012-02-16 09:28 am (UTC)(link)
Story of my fucking movie obsessed life. Every time I hear about an original movie with a good concept I'm always so let down. They have massive potential, but never life up to it. I guess that's what fanfic is for, but it irritates me that it couldn't be done right the first time in the movie and possibly spawn more movies after.

(I'm still bitter about The Covenant...)

(Anonymous) 2012-02-16 11:21 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't want to see it at all but then I watched it and actually liked it

[identity profile] gully-moe.livejournal.com 2012-02-16 01:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Wait, the movie came to theaters and then left? How could I have missed it?
