I wouldn't say I'm this "extreme," mostly because even my "happy" fandoms tend to have somewhat dark canon, but yeah, I do the same thing. I think with canons that are really dark, I don't really want to see more darkness in fic. But sometimes when I like a canon to remain a little more upbeat, fic can be a nice way of exploring darker scenarios.

I'm like this too. I've written happy, even "fluffy" fic in Hellsing and Silent Hill both. I feel especially funny about it in Silent Hill, but I keep it as IC as possible (and post-game or slightly AU, needless to say.)

I do write dark fucked-up fic in those fandoms too, but... I enjoy giving those poor people a break.

(And I've written dark fic in "lighter" canons, but not as often. But I like that too.)

(In the right thread this time.)

Not so much character death, but I do like fic in lighthearted fandoms that deals with mature themes--darkfic, sex, things outside the canon's normal range. Doing it well involves a certain sort of fun creativity.

This makes a lot of sense to me. After all, fanfiction is often about exploring aspects not included directly in the canon material: in the case of dark canon, that would be fluff; in the case of fluffy canon, that would be dark. It's about seeing things from a new perspective.

[identity profile] anruiukimi.livejournal.com 2012-02-16 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
I definitely understand you, although maybe not to the extreme you mean. I'm currently writing a fic with the two in my icon that isn't exactly dark, but certainly far more serious then they are ever portrayed in the show.

Whatever works for you, OP, no worries. :D

No, I can't tell which series you're referring to based on such a skinny glimpse of it.

FTW means 'for the win,' right? Or am I missing yet another internet acronym? /missing the point

[identity profile] othellia.livejournal.com 2012-02-16 04:20 am (UTC)(link)
Yep, it's 'for the win'. In this content the OP is pretty much saying, "This is good/okay, right?"

[identity profile] barnabys-bane.livejournal.com 2012-02-16 04:30 am (UTC)(link)
I gotcha. This makes much more sense to me now. Thanks. :)

[identity profile] billybobfred0.livejournal.com 2012-02-16 05:32 am (UTC)(link)
That's the generally-understood definition, but given that it's under s!b, I think it's more likely that OP just turned WTF backwards.

(Apparently it can also mean "fuck the world", but I know that's not what OP meant.)

[identity profile] barnabys-bane.livejournal.com 2012-02-16 05:43 am (UTC)(link)
Huh. Didn't know about that second definition for it. I have so much trouble keeping up with internet acronyms sometimes. I'm kind of embarrassed about how long it took me to figure out such things as HBIC and HTH. Then again, I've never been good with shorthand.

[identity profile] billybobfred0.livejournal.com 2012-02-16 05:46 am (UTC)(link)
I haven't seen anyone actually use it that way, mind you. I just vaguely recall reading it somewhere.

[identity profile] barnabys-bane.livejournal.com 2012-02-16 05:59 am (UTC)(link)
Wouldn't surprise me if it's a tiny fraction of people who use it that way and it randomly ended up on some dictionary-type deal for internet speak. I just see new acronyms crop up everywhere, and I don't know that I can keep up sometimes.

[identity profile] skibobsmells.livejournal.com 2012-02-16 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
You might be trying to find a balance between the two extremes, as others have suggested.

[identity profile] intrigueing.livejournal.com 2012-02-16 05:47 am (UTC)(link)
Did I write this in my sleep? I LOVE these kinds of fics! They're my two very favorite kinds of fics.

[identity profile] siwpes.livejournal.com 2012-02-16 07:56 am (UTC)(link)
I do that too, Anon. I think we are just looking for things canon dooesn't give us.
