Unless you were a major BNF, it's not likely. And unless your novel makes it to, like, the Bestseller's list or something, you probably don't have to worry.

Honestly, if it's as long ago as it sounds like it is, you've most likely been forgotten (unless, like I said, you were a major BNF/author). If your work is still up then change the name you have your work under.

If anything, you can simply deny any connection to your fandom counterpart. Pretend you don't even know what fan fiction is. Speculation isn't proof, after all.

Unless you're someone who caused a lot a wank, plagiarized, and/or are (like) Cassie Clair (Clare--she reallllllllllyyyy should've chosen a dissimilar pro name instead of something so close her fan writer name since she has to know she's very controversial although it sounds like she recycled her fan work w/o revamping it into something more dissimilar than it is--I've not read it), I don't think you need to worry about it especially since it sounds like it's been a while since you were in fandom.

Just choose a different pseudonym for your pro writing and you'll be fine. If by some unlikely coincidence some does figure it out, deny, deny, deny.

I read a couple of fanfic authors who are pro writers. They use fanfic to work out writing mechanics for their pro work (ie. if they're trying a new technique they try it in fanfic to see how it goes and if people like it before using it in their pro work). They also write it b/c they enjoy it.

One fic author I've figured out their pro author name although I don't think she's tried all that hard to disguise it (it's not that hard to figure out since she also draws fanart/original art, posts it to her lj, and I've seen the orig. art used on her pro ebooks as a cover). The other I've not figured out their pro name since they've taken care to disguise it better.

How young were you when you last did something stupid with your name on it? IMO anyone who digs shit up from someone's life before the age of 14 is a dick. Who hasn't done something stupid at that age?

Use a pseudonym?

(Anonymous) 2012-02-16 03:26 am (UTC)(link)
Because there is no such thing as two people with the same name. Just saying. Unless you posted pics of yourself in the fandom, then .... whatever! You were a kid. Anyone who cares is a giant ass, and so should really not bother you.

Pen names. They exist for a reason, you know.

don't let that hold you back, man! If you're REALLY worried, write under a pseudonym - you can even change your name

And the worst that would happen would be...what, exactly?

(Anonymous) 2012-02-16 10:58 am (UTC)(link)
In all honestly? There are professional authors out there who write fanfiction...and yes, it is known by some [and no, I don't mean Cassandra Claire - other ones who *aren't* infamous for plagiarism], but chances are no one will really pick up on it. Or, if they do, it won't really be talked about beyond 'Dude, I heard they write fic for X fandom'. Even that's fairly unlikely.

Whatever else you want to say, so is kicking some arse in that pic.

I mean, boo-hiss on the violenc thing and all (unless there's a good reason?), but if you're going to scrap in the streets, atleast do it properly. No hair pulling or scratching or shit, just a good solid left.
