Yes, and hopefully they can avoid some of the sketchy things a lot of romcoms tend to pass off as harmlessly "romantic."

[identity profile] fenm.livejournal.com 2012-02-16 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
True! But then, I want STRAIGHT romcoms to stop doing that shit, too...

(Anonymous) 2012-02-16 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
Absolutely!

(Anonymous) 2012-02-16 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
What kind of things? I don't watch a lot of romcoms.

(Anonymous) 2012-02-16 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
Every psychotic thing Meg Ryan characters have done in every terrible romantic comedy she's ever forced on the world at large. Kidnapping, poisoning, etc.

(Anonymous) 2012-02-16 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
Jesus, how'd I forget STALKING?

[identity profile] fenm.livejournal.com 2012-02-16 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
Don't forget the wonderful message that no matter how successful a woman is in all other aspects of her lie, unless she has a man, she's WORTHLESS.

http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/StalkingIsLove

Then there was that Family Guy romcom parody about The Business Woman Who was So Busy With Business That She Forgot About Love (or whatever) where the male lead tells her "I plan to use the next ninety minutes convincing you that all of your problems can be solved with my penis!"

(Anonymous) 2012-02-16 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
Excellent work.

Female abusing the male like its funny. One of them had a female raping the male and it was played for laughs (I think this was in one of those wedding movies). Romcoms can be sexist as hell. Women being damsels in distress that have to be rescued by men. Career women are suddenly unhappy in their jobs and are rescued from their unhappiness by finding their OTL and possibly quitting and becoming a mom. And on and on.

This Means War, not seen it yet (is it out yet?), just based on the plot description is creepy beyond belief and it's supposed to be a romcom, I believe. 2 CIA agents are "battling" it out to date this woman by bugging her house, phone, monitoring her email, etc. Basically being creepy-ass stalkers and you want to scream run away fast at the woman.

I believe that was The Wedding Crashers. When that part was described to me I could barely believe it. Later I caught a little bit of it on cable and realized right away what movie it was because it was just as creepy as described.

So far, so good on that front. There aren't a lot of gay romcoms, but the ones I've seen don't stray into the creepy, no really this is romantic and not abusive crap the way straight romcoms tend to.

(Anonymous) 2012-02-16 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
Unfortunately, I suck at remembering titles. Most of my gay romcom exposure is with a particular friend, when I show up at his place and he's all "I found a cute movie on netflix and we're watching it now." I'll try to remember to ask him if he remembers the titles of the ones I've really liked and post back.

Mambo Italiano was pretty cute (I mean, I guess it wasn't fantastic but I liked it well enough)

Annnnd, for some reason that's the only one I can think of. Which is weird, because I know I've seen a pretty decent amount of gay romcoms...I'll come back if I can think of any more

D.E.B.S
And Then Came Lola
Touch of Pink
The Itty Bitty Titty Committee
But I'm a Cheerleader
Imagine Me & You
Gray Matters
I Can't Think Straight
Mambo Italiano!

I am super tired, and I feel like I should know more. But they're probably the more serious movies that I'm thinking of that are adding to my numbers. Also my computer died a while ago, so I lost access to my giant folder of LGBT movies/documentaries D:

Breakfast with Scot!

How could I forget! Gay Canadian hockey players. The guy from Ed is in this, he's in Gray Matters too, he's one of the straight ones in that movie though =P

P.S I am not the anon above, I am some other random person who stumbled across your request *g*

Welp. This will be my weekend.

Also, some dramas that are really great

The Wedding Banquet
Patrik Age, 1.5 (not a precisely romance movie, but the romance is really beautiful)

In & Out - it's not the best of movies, but it's very cute and hilarious in parts

[identity profile] rivulet027.livejournal.com 2012-02-16 05:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Sadly the only thing I could two I could think of were Mambo Italiano and Imagine Me and You.

I'd say Queer as Folk UK, series 2 could count as a romantic comedy, especially with the way ending.

nayrt

Lesbian movies I've liked:

Imagine Me & You (a little iffy but majorly cute--woman (doesn't realize she's a lesbian until her wedding day and falls for the florist--so it's kind of adulterous (mainly emotional) but they don't have sex--so it might be a bit squicky that way (for me and maybe others)but it's majorly cute every other way). iirc, watch through the credits to find out what happened to the (ex-)husband.

D.E.B.S.--James Bond parody with a lesbian villain who falls for her heroine counterpart--very cute. LOVED IT.

But I'm a Cheerleader--kind of serious theme but awesome. Teenage girl who every thinks is a lesbian is sent to a make 'em straight camp and realizes she's a lesbian there (the thought had never occurred to her before). Kind of romcom.

The Incredibly True Adventures of Two Girls in Love. I love this movie. I think it's sweet and it's based (somewhat) on a true story, iirc. It's about 2 teenagers from different social classes coming together and it stars an interracial couple.

Saving Face is a must-see. It's about 2 Chinese-American lesbians getting together and being in and out of the closet and the family's denial. It's not a serious as it sounds and it's an English language movie but some dialogue is in Chinese and thus, has subtitles.

Nina's Heavenly Delights is excellent. It takes place in Scotland.

I loved Better than Chocolate. It's got a young Christina Cox playing a lesbian who falls for another lesbian (both are out although one isn't to her family--hijinks ensue). Takes place in Canada.

Kissing Jessica Stein doesn't actually qualify a lesbian movie in the end, I think, but it's romcommie-like and it's entertaining enough (hated the end. I maintain she's a biromantic asexual; I'd have liked it better if she'd realized it).

Bound is an action movie rather than romcom but if you've not seen it, you should watch it. 2 lesbians take on the MOB. Warning or enticement ;-) : the first 30 mins contain an explicit torture seen and lesbian sex scene so don't watch it w/people you don't know well (gah, I didn't know this and watched it w/my mother, I was so embarrassed).

Gay male movies:

Trick was cute. Don't remember much about it but thinking it was fun. It's a romcom about 2 guys looking a place to have sex and falling for each other along the way.

Were the World Mine. A gay Midsummer's Night Dream musical movie about a teenage guy who wishes the town was gay so they could experience what his life was like. It was very cute and I liked the singing.

Well. That's pretty much what I remember off-hand right now.

Imagine Me and You? Does that count as a romcom?

(Anonymous) 2012-02-16 02:50 am (UTC)(link)
I think so. How about Saving Face (to continue on the lesbian front)?

(Anonymous) 2012-02-16 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
"Wedding Wars" is kind of romcom meets fluffy made-for-tv activism. "Adam and Steve" is also good, and there's my favorite bit of camp about 1950s Hollywood: "Straight-Jacket."
