This makes me sad, anon. And kind of scares me - the SGA fandom is my main fandom, and I'd hate for it to die completely on me. I feel you :(

Re-reading the old stuff isn't the same, I know, but hopefully there's enough old stuff posted that you don't have to read the same fics repeatedly?

TBH, I haven't seen much "fade" in SGA fandom. I think the flow of fic is pretty steady.

Oh, it's steady for sure - but a lot of writers have moved on to Merlin, Hawaii Five-O, etc. They come back for certain fic events -

sga_santa for example, but their main fandoms are no longer SGA.

The flow is steady, but slower than it was back when the fandom was huge.

Really? I think it's pretty dead.

New fic is posted nearly every day.

Yeah, one or two trickle in, but the quality of most of it leaves a lot to be desired.

Every now and then one of the well-known authors post something new *nod*

I respectfully disagree.

I've been in small fandoms with very little and very crappy output before, and SGA is not it. Everything is not ZOMG AMAAAAZING, but it wasn't 4 years ago either. Most people are in denial of how much crappy and utterly forgettable fic was posted in the heyday of SGA fandom. Just because a BNF wrote it doesn't mean it's good.

If nothing else, I've found that the fic is a lot more varied now. More pairings are being explored, new themes, and more people are looking beyond the collection of tropes that pretty much was McShep at one point. There might be less fic right now, but what is posted is certainly more interesting.

Just because your other fandoms were smaller and crappier doesn't negate the fact that SGA has gotten small and crappy. That's like saying I can't complain about a broken arm because you have a two broken legs.

The problem with SGA is that back in it's day it was a 1. very large fandom that 2. had above average writers and 3. who produced a ridiculous amount of fic. It set the bar pretty high, and some fans got used to that level of quality and quantity. Compared to that, yeah, the fandom's pretty dead and sad. Compared to some fandom like Earth2 (for a random example) it's still active and high quality, but compared to it's own hayday it's pretty sad.

Yeah, I hate that attitude. There are still plenty of people - talented people - who are active in SGA. Personally, I love what the new people bring to the fandom.

This is my sixth year as a SGA fan, and I like the fandom as it is now. I just really hate the way certain individuals, who by their own admission no longer are even in the fandom, make new fans feel like crap with statements like that. SGA is not dead, but that attitude is a great way of killing it.

Not my job to make you want to do something. I'd assume that you write in the fandom because you enjoy it, not to make every single fan happy. Kind of insecure and ridiculous of you to stop writing due to one anon on F!S.

Don't be dissuaded from participating. Most everyone I've met in SGA fandom are really great, nice people.

Yeah, I finally have to admit to myself that SGA is dying. :( I check the comms every few days for new fic, but it seems to be all Sheppard-centric porn and badfic - and not even much of those. It was fun while it lasted, tho.

I just think it goes in cycles. Before summer last year, jeez, it was slow and then a bunch of fics were posted all of a sudden. It's probably pretty desolate if you're not into McKay/Sheppard because I think McShep Match is the biggest fandom event all year.

Actually, the Reversebang had close to fifty people sign up, which is something like double what it was last year? So I think it depends.

That's funny, because the people I've seen cry the most over how dead SGA is are old McSheppers and Shweir fans. The rest of them are still doing their own thing.

I'm an anyone-but-Sheppard fan, so the fandom hasn't always been for me. And lately it seems it's devolved into all Sheppard all the time, so yeah, pretty dead for me.

I could see the complaint for Shweir fans since I haven't seen a John/Liz story in a while but as a McShep fan, I don't have any complaints. The only thing I've noticed less of is graphics. For fic, I feel satisfied.
