Is that why I keep seeing this weird comparison between Twilight and The Hunger Games? Because, beyond the love triangle of Katniss, Peeta, and Gale, I don't see any similarities between the two series! Seriously, where is this coming from?

The Hunger Games was publicly endorsed by Stephenie Meyer herself. She gave it a huge stamp of approval on her personal website.

I know that but is that the only reason for the odd comparisons I see people make? Not just the 'Hunger Games is the new Twilight craze' but people saying they are really similar, without giving any evidence why.

I'll admit, I'm not a fan of Twilight and so I don't like to see The Hunger Games, a series I really enjoy, being held to the same level as something I really can't stand.

Oh. Hm. Well, if I had to guess it would be the love triangle, but other than that... I don't see the comparison. At all.

And I'm really not a total HG fan, but I can't even tell you how irritated I get when Bella is compared to Katniss. "They're both strong women who go to great lengths to help those they love" is the argument I'm always hearing, and it never fails to upset the happy out of me.

I'll admit, I'm not a fan of Twilight and so I don't like to see The Hunger Games, a series I really enjoy, being held to the same level as something I really can't stand.

That's exactly how I feel about the constant Harry Potter & Twilight comparisons. Just. Ugh. There's even less to compare than Hunger Games and Twilight. It makes absolutely no sense but everyone still does it anyway.

*Coughs* Not only did I not really answer your Q, but I ended up rambling, too. Sorry!

UGH YES! The comparisons between Twilight and Harry Potter all started when SMeyer was doing her book signings and book tours and the bookstore owners and/or whoever the news interviewed kept saying "I've never seen a crowd this size" followed by "This is the next Harry Potter!", "She's the American JKRowling!", over and over and over and over and OVER again.

Then the twihards picked it up, and get all smug at how ~Twilight is the little movie that could~ and how much money it made compared to HP, and the media picked it up eventually and ran with it.

Love triangles, a main character with... not much personality (in my opinion), the way in the 2nd book she's all "oh, I'll die for Peeta" being a step away from Bella's "I'll die without Edward", the wish fulfillment aspects in how suddenly everyone loves Katniss and she's the head of a movement (see Bella suddenly getting in with the popular kids, the Cullens)... Fun read, though.

Love triangles are everywhere. Every single shojo manga ever written has a love triangle. I can think of dozens of other books that have love triangles and I wouldn't compare them to each other just because of that. It's a weak comparison.

Lacking personality is your own opinion. I thought Katniss had plenty of personality: intense loyalty to protect those she loves, a killer survival instinct that helped her to last through the Games and the war, trust issues, and more. But that's your opinion.

Dying FOR someone is a lot different than dying WITHOUT someone. Katniss felt she owed Peeta a debt after everything he had done for her. It had nothing to do it with love, just Katniss deciding that Peeta was the one who needed her protection during the second Games, after everything he did for her in the first.

Yeah, everyone does fall in love with Katniss, I can't deny that. But my argument here is that she doesn't want it. She would rather not be the center of attention. She would rather just carry on with her quite life in District 12, trying to keep her family alive. But everyone around her forces her to be the Mockingjay, to be the center of attention. And after everything is over, she keeps trying to fade back into obscurity.

I still say that everything you mentioned is a stretch for people to compare the two series to each other.

Just have to say, being willing to die FOR someone is a pretty big step away from the melodrama of thinking you'll die WITHOUT someone.

Such a big step, in fact, it's practically a marathon.

Most parents in the world would die for their children, and yet we never lump the capacity for self-sacrifice in mothers and fathers into the same category as teenage over the top angst.

Nor do we count soldiers willing to die for their country as being a 'step away' from Bella Swann. Which, in essence, was what Katniss was doing - willing to die to save Peeta who she believed to be in every way What It Means To Be Good, and a fit leader for the resistance.

THIS.

[identity profile] piratesswoop.livejournal.com 2012-02-16 03:07 am (UTC)(link)
The films are being distribute by the same parent company, iirc, so there's some overlap.

[identity profile] lit-wolf.livejournal.com 2012-02-16 03:22 am (UTC)(link)
Well... that's disturbing to hear.

[identity profile] broadwaybabe11.livejournal.com 2012-02-16 02:43 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, and the love triangle is definitely not the center of the plot!

Well, if you know a middle schooler who's gushing over Twilight, you give her The Hunger Games and say "Read this instead."

[identity profile] bamboo.livejournal.com 2012-02-16 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
It might be because Lions Gate wants Hunger Games to be their new Twilight now that the movies are coming to an end. They've been marketing it as The Next Twilight, and the HG triangle as the new Edward/Bella/Jacob. If the distributor is all for it, the media is going to pick it up, and it trickles down to the fanbase even if not everyone agrees.
