I think it's less that trigger warnings get excessive as opposed to some people are misusing the word trigger.

A trigger is something that seriously impacts your mental health. It can cause a flashback, panic or a very intense emotional reaction.

Unfortunately, a lot of people are using it to mean something that squicks them. A squick is something which grosses you out. Maybe even grosses you out really, really badly. But it doesn't actually have a severe impact on your overall mental health.

Because people have misused trigger to mean squick, there seems to be a group of people that think people are required to included a warning for anything and everything that squicks them and then call it a trigger warning. This is not true and it's making it hard for people who truly are triggered to explain what happens to them and causes people to be dismissive of their reactions.

Different anon. I think another problem is that even when someone uses the word trigger correctly, they could have very specific triggers. I have some that I don't think anyone else does, and thus I wouldn't expect anyone to warn for them because that would involve them to have prior, in-depth knowledge of my specific requirements. I see people demanding warnings for every little thing under the sun, or GIVING warnings for every little thing under the sun, and regardless of if they're actually fully triggered by them, it's looking for things that they can't possibly expect people to have prior knowledge of.

One time I saw a warning given for hemophobia. Want to know how this played out in the post? A mention of the poster's mother having hemophobia. There was no blood in the actual post, no pictures, no descriptions. Only a mention of the existence of a fear. And that's going too far.
