It's not a lack of understanding, at least not in my case,but simply a difference in philosophy:

There are only 2 ways to stop a harmful word from harming somone you can either ban it outright, make it taboo, or you can change it's meaning through common use.

The former wont work to may way of thinking. it only prereves the words power, or worse, amplifies it, making it more virelent through rarity value. see cunt in america for example.

The latter litterally robs the word of it's power. see cunt in england.

Actually see any swearword in the world.

Bastard comes to mind as a great example.

Really? Where'd you live? Up here in Newcastle it's admitedly less popular than down in the far south (My boss for example, but still used with more frequency than some kinds of punctuation, and it's not used as hatfully as it is by the yanks. Across the ocean it's a gendered insult (apparently) and is aimed at exclusivly at women, where as here it's really more of an all-purpose swear. Like smeg, but more fun to say.

And you are right, it's still offensive but only in the 'Dont say it infront of your nana' kind of way. Hell, among some folks it's even a compliment of sorts (See the scotts.)

I have to say: I'm not sure what point you were trying to mean to be honest, could you clarify?

it really depends in what context. me and my friends call eachother cunts affectionately, and also use it on a par with twat/bellend/arsehole, but i'd certainly never use it in a formal situation (or in front of my parents, haha)
