I'm not sure "trope" is exactly the right word (or maybe it is :D), but kids is the first thing. Stories about kids doing horrifying things always get me. Another one is survival horror with creative twists (I'm hugely into the Saw movies). My sister described it as "Ender's Game meets 1984 meets Survivor, WHY HAVEN'T YOU READ THIS," and that worked. And one I didn't even know I was this into is the ridiculous meta. The reality TV angle of the Games is what I find to be the most unique, disturbing element of the story: you've got this horrifying slaughter event that's presented as entertainment, and they dress the kids up all pretty for their 'competition,' and people watch it and love it and bet on them and all sorts of other things. On a somewhat-less-addicting for me but still important note, I love the kind of hero that Katniss is (the whole reluctant, prickly, passionate thing -- oh yes please) and I love the hero-worshippy-with-a-twist thing that Peeta has for her. It reminds me of Elphaba/Fiyero from musical!Wicked, who I also adore, so yes.
