There is the popular fanon theory that this all took place in Barney's head - Ted is just wearing a wedding ring because Barney would assume that, being Ted, he got married. Which would explain why the mother's not there, as she apparently become close with the gang. Also, Barney's not wearing a wedding ring and (unless his wife is Robin) his wife isn't there. It would be kind of a bummer if Future Ted had built up the whole Barney-Robin love story and everything leading up to his wedding if he just divorces his wife within ten years. So maybe he was just dreaming the whole thing.

Well, he could be changed, but still occasionally a tool. I don't think Barney will ever completely stop being a jackass. And who knows, maybe this was a totally shocking thing and everyone screamed their heads off at him and refused to talk to him for ages after he did that.

It's a flashforward to 2021, where Barney was on his deathbed with his friends, and he asks Marshall to eat a meatball sub with him at his bedside, but then the sub explodes in Marshall's face and Barney jumps up laughing and reveals he faked the whole illness and just wanted to get back at Marshall for something he did back in 2011. The scene cuts out before we see anyone yell at him or anything, but they all looked completely furious so it was apparently a big deal.

From the episode The Exploding Meatball Sub, Barney plans to get his revenge on Marshall for telling him he can marinara sauce on his tie (or face?) by giving him an exploding meatball sub at lunch, only Marshall quits his job the day before and so never eats lunch with Barney that day. At the end of the episode, there's a scene that takes place in 2021 where Barney pretends to be dying in order to trick Marshall into eating the exploding meatball sub.

I liked this scene mainly because Robin looked so enraged it felt like a hint that she and Barney will get together. Not that the others wouldn't be entitled to be totally furious too, but the scene made it obvious that Robin was the angriest one, when in the present, she's usually the one who's most nonchalant about Barney's dickery. Also, I kinda squeed when I saw the wedding ring on Ted's finger :)

Sounds like a good headcanon to me, and, while I don't know exactly what this secret is referencing, it tells me enough to reinforce my decision to still not be watching HIMYM anymore.
