I haven't read that much NCIS fic myself, but the fact that there is potentially a lot of bad Jenny!fic out there makes me a sad panda.

At least you're a good friend in the 'if you can't say something nice, don't say nothin' at all' sense OP. Is your friend 100% opposed to constructive criticism? Because that alone doesn't seem to bode well for them professionally.

YAY NCIS SECRET!!!!!

I'm guessing the pic is related?

I so know what you mean, OP.

One of my friends in the HP fandom is a truly terrible writer. And I don't mean mediocre or bar-level adequate. I mean terrible. She doesn't get many reviews and she's so darn sensitive, though, so I always end up scanning her work and telling her I enjoyed it. I've even beta-read her stuff before, which, let me tell you, is sheer torture.

If she had tougher skin I would try to give her con crit, but she reacts very badly to any form of criticism so I never dared. I hate lying, but I'm too much of a coward to tell her her writing sucks when she asks for my opinion. And she's the type who'd ask for honest con-crit but then get upset when she gets it, so I can never even offer suggestions to help her improve.

Yeah.

Wow, that SUCKS. I was writing in script form before someone came along and said my writing sucks and took me under their wing. I became a much better writer because of it. Even though I admittedly haven't written in a few years and am finding it difficult to get back into it after so long, at least I still remember all of her advice and have the confidence that even if my work is mediocre at least it's not nearly as bad as it was!

There are things you can do to help this situation - the first thing being, don't just ignore the bad stuff. With people who are sensitive to criticism, it's often that they don't know how to take that crit and turn it into something positive, so what you as a friend/beta need to do (if you want to help) is find a way past that.

The easiest way is to pick one thing, say, characterization, and focus on that. Then instead of saying "that doesn't sound like Jenny", you sugar-coat it a bit - "this is really good, but you know what would make it fantastic? If you did XYZ". The important part is to give them something concrete they can use. They're not going to improve overnight, and this is where the 'if you want to help' comes in, because it will take a LOT of patience on your part. I used to beta for one girl who didn't understand how speech tags worked, so I explained them to her, then painstakingly corrected them every time she sent me something to beta. And every time she got one right I was all over praising it. Were there other things wrong with the fic? Absolutely - but by taking something small and relatively simple and helping her fix it, we built trust, so when I did have more difficult things to bring up it went over easier.

The biggest thing is to balance your crit with compliments. Find something you do like and make sure they know you like it - doesn't really matter what it is. Maybe a kick-ass piece of dialogue, the overall feel of the story, the relationships... whatever. Criticism is MUCH easier to take when it's surrounded by compliments.

I hope you find a way to help your friend, because if nothing else, if she doesn't learn to handle crit, she won't last five minutes as a professional writer.
