[My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic]

(Anonymous) 2012-02-17 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
SI is tolerable if the insert is just an ordinary pony, in fact a well written one with the insert struggling to do without opposable thumbs, and learning to walk on four leggs, is an intersting read. Pity there is so few of them. SI only work when the author is able to make fun of herself writing it.

[identity profile] fictionalbf.livejournal.com 2012-02-17 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
...are you me

I don't watch MLP, so I don't read fics for it, but my favourite self-inserts are ones where the author is fully aware of what they're doing and don't mind making their self-insert the buttmonkey of the story. Even if it's only occasionally.

[identity profile] intrigueing.livejournal.com 2012-02-18 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
This is how I like to read self insert fic too. Or at the very least, like they're outsiders looking in and not knowing everything about the characters that the author knows.

[identity profile] netbug009.livejournal.com 2012-02-18 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
YES.

I wish I could find more SI fic where the people writing it are actually self aware and keep their fatal flaws. Most of the time they just turn themselves into the boring perfect character.

(Anonymous) 2012-02-18 04:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Good not-pony SI is "Sleeping WIth tHe Girls" where SI thinks can run rings around characters becuase he knows the story, but discover that is under same laws as characters in the universe. When Murphy's Law is actual law of physics in-universe then being a smart aleck is fast track to Butt Munkey and explosion in face. Or Romantic Misunderstanding grants girldfriend is law, then try to get rid of girl only gets more and wrong sort.

same with "I was a Tennage Dumy Plug" in Evangleion. Might know story, but still dum teenager and just cause know Gendo secrets doesn't change that Gendo is much much smarter than SI with far more resources in-universe.

Lol people who write self-insert fan fic aren't being fucking selfish. The mentality that all fanworks should cater to your personal tastes, on the other hand...

[identity profile] kikkyo.livejournal.com 2012-02-18 03:22 am (UTC)(link)
This. I mean, as mediocre as self-insert mary sue fic is, fanfiction isn't exactly professional work but you have to start somewhere.

(Anonymous) 2012-02-18 02:04 pm (UTC)(link)
this

[identity profile] billybobfred0.livejournal.com 2012-02-18 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
There are absolutely self-insert fics in every fandom.

Well, except the really tiny ones that only ever get fic because people decide to take offhand jokes as challenges. But every fandom bigger than that gets self-inserts.

If you don't like it, just scroll more.

[identity profile] poisonivory.livejournal.com 2012-02-18 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
"It's so selfish when people write what they want to write, for themselves, and post it on the internet, free, so that I can read it if I want to (but I am certainly not obligated to)!"

[identity profile] rightcyclone.livejournal.com 2012-02-18 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
Now, I don't like FiM, but I do feel the need to point out, as a fan of the original, that a major part of the original was Megan coming from Earth to help the Ponies. So there is precedent for human-in-ponyville, and it's a pretty big one.

[identity profile] insanenoodlyguy.livejournal.com 2012-02-18 07:50 pm (UTC)(link)
There is no justification for Mary Sue's that explains anything. OC human in ponyville isn't inherantly horrible, but when it's your self insert, it's guaranteed.

Though I'm a bit dubios about it besides. The Gen 1 ponies were notably less... competent then the current generation. I'm not so sure they would plausibly need alien help.

There's a pony-in-Detroit fic? Does someone have the link? I'd get a kick out of reading it.

(Anonymous) 2012-02-18 04:14 am (UTC)(link)
In my mind, "My Little Dashie" took place either in Detroit or Flint, Michigan. It fit the whole 'dying city' premise to the story. Not sure if OP is talking about that one, or a different one.

[identity profile] castorochiaro.livejournal.com 2012-02-18 03:53 am (UTC)(link)
Ehh, since you mentioned it in the secret, I tried to read "My Little Dashie" since I kept hearing it was so heartbreaking and had driven everyone who had read it to tears. I just could not get into it; it just felt like I was looking into someone's wish fulfillment fantasy. It was uncomfortable more than endearing. Plus the whole set-up felt really contrived, like it was MADE to gain the audience's pity rather than allowing the audience to take it as it would.

Self-insert just isn't my thing either, OP. I don't think they're a mark of selfishness as much as...I dunno, personal.

[identity profile] heyheyitsjane.livejournal.com 2012-02-19 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
Ugh, my roommate and I tried reading My Little Dashie and we couldn't stop laughing; the whole thing is just so glurgy and melodramatic. (Also, like you said, creepy wish-fulfillment.)

[identity profile] wolfiemon.livejournal.com 2012-02-18 04:27 am (UTC)(link)
My Little Dashie is kind of creepy imo... I couldn't even read the whole thing. 8p

(Anonymous) 2012-02-18 05:12 am (UTC)(link)
...Wait, how are they selfish? I mean, they're writing something that, presumably, they enjoyed writing...and are posting it to share it. How, exactly, is that being selfish? It's not like they get paid for it, and while they might get some asspats for it, I have my doubts on how many they'd really get. SI isn't exactly the most popular genre, last I checked.

(Anonymous) 2012-02-18 07:07 am (UTC)(link)
I agree that it's selfish, actually. Even though it's done for free, in your own personal time, etc. Self-inserts, whether sexual or not, pretty much ARE just a person's fantasies if they take up a significant amount of the story. And the writer isn't the only one investing time into a story- the reader has to do the same thing. Usually these things are huge and have a fuckton of chapters, and that's not even taking into account the wait between the chapters.

I read fic for the show because I care about the existing characters. If I don't know an author and don't care about them personally, I'm not going to care about their self-insert. I might read my friend's self-insert fic, but a stranger's is just... well, kind of masturbatory. It's like hearing about somebody else's dream that they had. Unless you're really interested in that person, there's no reason to care.

Aaaaaaaaand. I'm not saying it's BAD or anything, but as a girl I'm a little uncomfortable with the fact that the self-inserts are usually guys who have this destined-to-succeed relationship with the author's favorite girl pony. I know it's a female-heavy cast, but if you want to write het, there are a ton of background ponies that have a little bit of fanon personality and that you can mostly flesh out. I mean writing about Doctor Hooves or Big Mac getting with Fluttershy doesn't squick me out as much as you writing about YOURSELF getting with Fluttershy, because it's this... I don't know. It feels like you want to make sure the whole internet knows that you want to bang Fluttershy, and that's just... a little too much information for me. At least if you're writing canon-main-girl/fanon-background-guy, there's this level of plausible deniability that it's not as much about your fantasy as it is that you think it could make an interesting story.

I just don't want to know if you want to bang Fluttershy. It feels like some dude at a con telling me what his fetishes are when I didn't ask, I don't know him, and he's creeping me out.

I... never said it wasn't okay to HAVE that kink. I'm a little grossed out by Fluttershy-lust, but I don't really have a problem with it existing. What's gross is people needing everyone to know about it.

Self-insert fic is distasteful in general. Throwing a modern, knowledgeable human in a pony skin into Equestria makes it that little bit worse, as it's going to destroy the inhabitant's innocence. Human in Equestria fics have the same problem. Modern, fully unchanged human S.I. in Equestria? AW HELL NAW.

The good S.I.s scale back how much this affects to almost nothing, or better, have the S.I. change to adapt to their world. Unfortunately, writers' motivations for a S.I. mean they almost always act like Emperor Palpatine: "POWWERRR, UNLIMITED POWEERRR!"; The Doctor: "I'm here to solve everyone's problems!"; or Sean Connerey's James Bond: "Ladies. Form a queue.". Or all three. <_< One MLP S.I. that sorta works: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/6930195/1/My_Little_Brony_Reality_vs_Fantasy And one HiE: http://www.equestriadaily.com/2011/08/story-article.html
