This article about Ioana seems to offer her point of view, I think it's pretty harsh to quickly decide she's horrifying, I mean clearly she has a very unusual shape but it's not necessarily because she's dying to be skinny.

But if somewhere society's holding this woman up a physical ideal/role model then, yeah, I still feel like the mentality it's thrusting on young women is horrifing even if this woman didn't choose to look this way. Your average human being is just not shaped like this- bad enough models/etc have ribs removed to make their waists smaller.

absolutely this

How can anyone say she doesn't choose to look that way when it's obvious she's strapping on a corset?

[identity profile] natural-blue-26.livejournal.com 2012-02-18 03:05 am (UTC)(link)
Yes. Thank you. (I think it even said she was in that article.) If she dislikes it so much, why would she be playing it up?

Also, if that's what 20in looks like on someone who's 5' 7" (aside, isnt that "short" for the high fashion industry's crazy standards?), someone please tell me that Scarlett O'Hara was closer to 5' or I think I'll have to totally redo my mental picture of her lol.

nayrt

"But if somewhere society's holding this woman up a physical ideal/role model then, yeah, I still feel like the mentality it's thrusting on young women is horrifing ..."

Does anyone look to that woman as a physical ideal, though? I mean, that's beyond just thin or skinny or unhealthily-skinny. Obviously Barbies have out-of-whack proportions and thinness like that, and some cartoon characters... but they also aren't real and can therefore support the caricaturized exaggerations of the feminine form. The women who make covers of magazines or get named the hottest, despite all the additional Photoshopping they get to enhance their natural assets, don't come out looking like that (and if they do, it's usually ridiculed on a blog dedicated to Photoshop fails).

I'm just saying, if anyone's holding that exact particular figure up as an actual ideal, then they're in a minority.

I guarantee you that there is a girl out there right now - maybe even one on this thread - who is Googling pictures of this woman and comparing herself to her unrealistic proportions. Even if they ARE in a minority, there are a shit ton of self-conscious women and girls with really low self-esteem who are looking at this picture and thinking that this is what they should be looking like.

I find it very sad that in this article (http://www.people.com/people/article/0,,20568120,00.html) she said her husband was the first person who ever saw her as attractive.
