NS1 -- Except that Evangelion it has some really awesome female characters in it what the hell are you even talking about

Just because a character is DEEPLY FLAWED doesn't mean they aren't a good character

Also I liked that the main character isn't overly manly for no reason -- as much as people hate on Shinji there aren't a lot of protagonists like him in mecha series (well at least there weren't when Evangelion came out), and if you gave a shit about subversion of gender roles at all maybe you would have noticed that

But whatever I guess it's the cool thing for kids to hate on Evangelion these days

I think they're talking about the fandom, not the show. That's why they said "highlights fandom's femiphobia[sic] and internalized misogyny." The fandom is full of "Asuka is a such a fucking bitch" and "Shinji is so weak, I hate him!"

A lot of fandom really hates Shinji, like spectacularly so, and for really misogynistic coded reasons, whilst loving Rei/Asuka.

If you gave even the slightest shit and subversion of gender roles, you'd realise Asuka and Rei take on traditionally male character archetypes whereas Shinji takes on a female one. Ergo I'm guessing that is what they're talking.

But no I'm sure they used a gender swapped picture for no reason, and that when they say fandom they actually explicitly meant the show itself.
