I dunno, being willing to go through that much shit to bring someone back from the dead implies a lot. I'm pretty sure the manual said something as well. I can't remember exactly what, but was she sacrificed for a ritual or something?

Even if the book doesn't tell you, the whole idea of the game should imply it. If he didn't love her then maybe he was responsible for her death and felt so guilty that he wanted her back. Either way, the point is, no ordinary feelings are going to make you want to go through that just for one person. He must have cared somehow.

If they were both men or girls people would automatically think they're siblings or friends.

OP I really don't know why it flew over your head. Wanderer said he'd do anything to bring Mono back even though he knew he'd have to pay a heavy price. Most of the imagery towards the end of the game where he's confronted by the priests (?) heavily implies he had feelings for Mono as well (he stole his sword he carries, Mono was the victim of a ritual, etc.).

I think there's supplemental material that says they were. But I've never read it so sometimes I like to imagine that they're siblings, childhood friends, partners in arms, or something else. I also sometimes see Wander as female.

I pretended she was his sister and he killed her by accident or something, not that they were a couple, because there was no way I was going to go through so much trouble just so they could bang.

Maybe she had a magical vagina or something!!

There's been no mention whatsoever about their relationship but lovers would be the easiest thing to assume, yes?

Because one of them in male and the other one is female, so this is what people assume.

Not saying it doesn't suck, but that's how most of our minds work until we realize how stupid it is.

From the clips I've seen from the game though, it's obvious he cares for her very much. Maybe they weren't lovers, but with a young man and a pretty girl, it's the logical conclusion

Oh. Damn. I can't recall if that was even in the manual, but I totally jumped the assumption train and thought she was Wander's girlfriend too!

I guess I'm just so used to background ladies in distress always being someone's, usually the hero's, love interest, I just expect it to be the case. I'm really liking the idea of her as my sister though.

I would love a story like this where it was a sibling trying to save another sibling. Or heck, I'd love it if they clarified that they had some awesome platonic sibmance thing going on without being related.

Kinda OT, but while playing Dead Space I pretended Nicole was Isaac's sister, at least until it was confirmed otherwise. It was just too painfully cliche and uninteresting otherwise.

I think it's really up to your own interpretation, we never really find out anything much about the characters. The only thing to do besides kill the colossi is just run around, explore, find tortoises, eat fruit, kill lizards, and try and fly by grabbing onto airborne hawks. That's it. It's a very minimalist game, and I think they deliberately left it up to interpretation.

I think we're supposed to assume it because he does so much for her. I mean, he could just as easily do that much for a sister or close friend, but I think the typical "dead/dying female love interest" is more likely.

To be honest, while the gameplay was cool, I never got attached to the characters at all.

He cares for her. A lot. REALLY a lot. Aaaaand that's it.
Any kind of relationship that involves caring REALLY a lot is fair game, but how are you surprised that love is a common hypothesis? 'They're siblings' isn't uncommon from what I've seen.

I dunno about the UK or JP boxart, but that's what it says on the US one.

When I see undying love mentioned on the box, I think of Agro and how he stuck by me even when I screwed up royally (which happened many times in playthroughs). That horse was the most badass steed I've ever seen.

I personally thought they were childhood friends or brother and sister, but that's because I can relate more to those relationships than a romance. I think it all just depends on what you consider to be important and what you would feel you would go through that much for.

In total agreement with you OP! First time I played through the game I imagined Wanderer as a super loyal and brave but low ranking warrior who was trying to revive priestess!princess!religious/political figure!Mono because of a hyper sense of duty. There is a whole lot of love in the world and in comes in different flavors - "undying love" does not automatically mean romantic love.

This also comes from the fact that many people think Wander and Mono are the ones that begin the line of horned children that end up becoming sacrifices in ICO.
