As a kid I always explained the lack of blood away by saying that they were not physical attacks, but attacks on the SOUL. Don't ask me why they could still do property damage and shit, but as a kid the soul theory made sense to me. Your theory is cooler, and makes more sense what with TM's roses doing actual damage.

I always assumed the lack of blood was just there because it wasn't important to show blood. It's more about the emotional impact. Not that you can't have an emotional scene with blood in it, but it just works better here.
It's an amazing scene though. I remember a few years ago when I was rewatching it and realized that the song playing in the background is a modeled off of the theme from the movie "Love Story." I think that's beautiful. ♥

A couple of weeks ago, I listened randomly to Camille Saint-Saens and realised that the song that plays when Usagi sees Mamoru's starseed sounds a bit like Tristesse. In general, I think the Sailor Moon soundtrack has many amazing songs. The Outer Senshis' theme, for example.
