The franchise pretty deliberately plays her into the creepy blank-slate nonthreatening sexdoll that a lot of the fandom wants her to be tho.

I guess her apathy during the series didn't help. Gendo was giving off seriously creepy vibes around her but she just never reacted in any way. Nor did she during that scene when Shinji walked in on her coming out of the shower.

I'm not involved with the fandom nor really looked for extra material on the series, how bad is Rei's sexualisation (both in fandom and out)? Does Asuka get the same treatment or is it just Rei?

They both get it. It's kind of a famous thing actually haha. I don't how familiar you are with anime merchandise though, but do a search for this series, and nearly everything is Rei and Asuka figures, and Rei and Asuka in pinups, and so on and so forth.

Rei is slightly more popular in Japan but it's not just her - Asuka gets a lot of the limelight, too.

If you go to hobby shops in Japan they're just teeming with sexy Asuka and Rei merch. It drives me batty, actually - most of the Eva merch (figures, posters, body pillows...) is just Asuka and Rei looking sexy and completely ploughs over their characters and the other elements of the show. Not to mention that I think I've seen like... one figure ever for Shinji, AND HE'S THE MAIN CHARACTER. I guess he isn't a sexy girl so he doesn't get merch!

The merchandising for Eva just makes me crazy. It's all about capitalizing on Asuka and Rei's sex appeal (and let us remember that they're both like... 14 or 15 fffff). I feel like it's creepy and is completely missing the point of the show. I put a lot of it on the same level as like Slave Leia for the degree which fanboys and marketing teams have just turned them into fetish fuel at the expense of character and meaning. Ugh.

I USED TO LOVE EVA BUT god I hate the marketing.

Yeah, there's a TON of hentai like that. She remains the "silent robot" (that's how I picture her expression) while some male character has his way with her. Rei fucking a teenage male character is just as popular as her fucking old dudes (teachers, janitors, random guys on the street who like her looks). "I have become the janitor's woman as he plowed me all night" and stuff like that. Becoming his woman/the man "owning" Rei is a really popular theme. :/ There's a doujin artist who does these types of stories all the time.

There's also lots of of Rei having sex with strangers for money, so in the end every guy at school who has a crush on her can have her for a certain price ("every" fanboy's dream, I reckon), and she moves on to the next guy right away or is "seeing" several men at once. I don't know why Japanese fanboys like her in the role of a prostitute so much, but there you have it. I guess they're thinking: "No strings attached sex with that hottie? Easy, I only need to pay her! No emotional baggage, no "girlfriend talk" afterwards, etc." The fact she's so silent and completely submissive only turns them on more.

As much as I think everyone is welcome to their kinks and their porn... that just kind of creeps me out. But I hate the way the fandom treats Asuka and Rei as sex icons so I'm hella biased.

I've never seen Evangelion (I need to get on that), but when I visited Tokyo a few years ago there was creepy Rin art EVERYWHERE. Asuka was there a little, but not as much as Rin. I vividly remember seeing statues of Rina and Asuka in their school girl uniforms standing in a Pachinko parlor.

Actually, I think that an Evangelion movie was playing in Japan at the time, so that might have explained the abundance of Rin pinups I saw. But seriously, isn't that character supposed to be 14 or something?

The sad part is that Anno originally intended Rei to be a creepy and unsettling character. But then fandom happened and nowadays she's pictured mostly as... well, that.

Official art like that keeps me from wanting to get into a lot of anime fandoms...

Yeah, 'cause there isn't official art like that for Western Live-Action fandoms that has nothing whatsoever to do w/the show.

I've definitely felt the same way before about Rei and other characters.

Long time since I watched the anime but I remember thinking they were presenting her as the docile sex object as opposed to Asuke's vixen. I would've considered it typical anime fan service, treating females - even professional females - as nothing but sex objects had I not known the whole thing was supposed to be from Shinji's teen-hormone riddled point of view.

I have trouble seeing either Asuka or Rei as sexy in the show just because they're both so incredibly damaged and Shinji's relationship with both of them is pretty fucked up, and Rei's skeevy relationship with Gendo just reached such high levels of no. I never saw them as being fanservicey at all (I'm sure somebody out there thinks the scene were Shinji beat off to Asuka's comatose body was hot, but I highly doubt it was supposed to be)i, but somehow the fans think otherwise! I just don't even get how Asuka and Rei have become like these ultimate sex icons among nerds. They're fucked up underage girls, ffs.

I totally agree, OP. :\ Especially since I think Rei's a really fascinating character in her own right, and then it's like the merch just...like....pushes aside everything that makes her so cool in favor of creepy fans' fantasies.

I'm with you, anon. I hate what the fandom and merchandising has done to her. Most of it is just OOC and misses the point of her character. If more of the smut brought out her creepy and unnerving side I'd be there but it's just all about Rei The Perfect Submissive Sex Doll. Ugh.

Evangelion is a pretty good example of how starkly OoC the official pinup art is. Even if the show's portrayal of Rei might have some problematic "woman=doll" aspects, I don't believe there's any part of the show where she's presenting to the audience, and certainly not like in that picture. She may have fanservice in the show, but she's a character first.
