I don't really know much about her except that she's married to Neil Gaiman. What did she do?

/genuinely curious

(Anonymous) 2012-02-24 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
OP

She's had at least one very cissexist song, she had a joke band where the joke was that the characters were conjoined twins with a history of childhood sexual abuse, she's made some pretty gross jokes about the Klan, and she did a skit on stage where she pretended to do some seriously rapey things to an actress dressed as Katy Perry. I think there's more that I am just not remembering at the moment.

I'm not giving her money or anything, because some of this shit hits pretty close to home. But... I really do like the way she sings and some of the things she's sang about also hit pretty close to home, if you know what I mean. So the extent of my support for her is pretty much listening to her alone in my apartment and not talking about it... but yeah, there's a reason this is a secret.

You are so very not alone, OP. I listen to her when I'm alone in the car, and that's about it. It really sucks when good artists are substantially less than good human beings.

oh man, I forgot about the Klan jokes! DDDD:

Anyway, I just wanted to say that I think you've got the best possible attitude about this, OP. You enjoy what you enjoy, but you don't feel comfortable supporting Amanda Palmer the person, so you're making the best of it.

(Anonymous) 2012-02-25 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
Yep. All of this pretty much.

She's had at least one very cissexist song

I'm curious, which song?

(Anonymous) 2012-02-25 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
"Sex Changes". It's pretty fucking awful, and it may be about something else entirely but it's still a really inappropriate metaphor to use.

[identity profile] fm-gatekeeper.livejournal.com 2012-02-25 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, okay, yeah--I can definitely see how you could find that one offensive.

(Anonymous) 2012-02-25 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
As a trans-person, I don't know.

A lot of what what the lyrics say in 'Sex Changes' accurately conveys what I've been told my whole life, and the sarcastic tone of voice does much for me what the tone of voice in 'Glad to be Gay' does for my queer sensibilities.

Because I've been told by my parents, over and over again, that I might change my mind about my own body.

That I'll regret it.

That I'll be murdered.

Worries about sensitivity and future orgasms being forever taken away.

That transition surgery is like plastic surgery, only worse, and there'll just be surgery after surgery after surgery, for the rest of my life.

Amanda Palmer may have a ton of other faults (in fact I don't like her very much either), but exposing cissexism for what it is in 'Sex Changes' isn't really one of them. In fact, I take empowerment from it.

[identity profile] lady-wormtongue.livejournal.com 2012-02-25 03:53 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks for offering your perspective as a trans-person. I like that song quite a bit, and thought the sarcasm was pretty clear.

(Anonymous) 2012-02-25 05:04 pm (UTC)(link)
OP (and anon that brought up the song) and I apologize. I don't really have a good ear for what's sarcasm and what's just disdain and what the context is. So it's probably me that was reading it wrong, or seeing only one way to read it? It makes me feel a little better to hear that she might have just been sarcastic about that, although it doesn't take away all the other things.

(Anonymous) 2012-02-26 03:04 am (UTC)(link)
trans-anon

It's okay! I'm glad people are questioning her motives for writing the things she does, and the mocking cissexism in 'Sex Changes' always gets me really angry about the sort of people who say those sorts of things. I can see why it'd be easy to interpret differently, or why people might direct anger at Amanda Palmer over it. Especially because, unlike Tom Robinson, she's not actually party to the -ism she's singing about, so it could potentially just be another attempt of Palmer's to be oh-so-edgy, yet remain unaffected in her day-to-day life.

'Sex Changes' just happens to be one of the few times that edgy accurately captures the disgusting attitude that many privileged people take towards minorities at its ugliest, so I'm willing to give it props for that.

The other things... yeah. Amanda Palmer, please stop.

(Anonymous) 2012-02-25 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
Which song do you find cissexist? I'd argue that many of her songs come from a place of personal identification with gender issues, like Half Jack

(Anonymous) 2012-02-25 04:42 am (UTC)(link)
(I asked the question earlier.)

Thanks for the reply. I'm not familiar with her music either, so I hadn't heard any of that. But I do think it's a sensible distinction to make between not liking an artist and still being able to acknowledge their talents.
