I don't watch MLP, but I saw a clip of the char in question and I thought she was just clumsy.

I thought it was cute, nothing about her struck me as offensive. (I'm learning now that "derp" is deemed ableist, though)

I mostly thought she was cute in that clip, mostly because goddamn I have this tendency to bump into things (mostly corners. I guess I turn too close and I hit corners like daily)

How is 'derp' ableist though? As far as I know, it's one of the only words for stupid that was NOT first used to apply to any group of disabled people.

You know, I think it's a regional thing and probably an age thing too. I know that a lot of people grew up with people using some variant of "hurr durr" as an insult, and "herp derp" is most likely derived from that. On the flip side, a lot of people DIDN'T grow up with that history so "derp" is just a funny internet word to them.

Oh, but is considered to be an ableist word by SJW though. IIRC (and that's a large if), derp came from South Park (? don't know--never watched SP in my entire life but I've it explained this way before) and was used by a disabled character to mock (?) the disabled. Since it was, it's an ableist slur now.

Feel free to correct me on this, SJW. IDGAF about whether it's a slur or not. I just hate how the word sounds in my head when I read it and won't be using it b/c of that.

Did come from South Park, was used to mock Rob Schneider and Rob Schneider's movies with a "Mr. Derp" character who did slapstick-type comedy. I do not know if Mr. Schneider is disabled or not, so I'm not sure if it still applies.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=14spdmfSqM0 this is the video in question, and I don't think it meant anything given how it was used.

The point of the whole 'derp-a derp' thing was that the premise of all of his movies is the same and you can replace 'derp' and such with whatever, like mad libs. It wasn't derogatory, just pointing out there's a basic formula to the plots of his films.

Yeah, but people still consider it ableist because it was later used to refer negatively to mentally disabled people, even though it was originally meant to be an onomatopoeia of slipping and falling or some similar clumsy accident.

ETA: somebody explained it better in a later comment here - http://fandomsecrets.livejournal.com/845360.html?thread=525760048#t525760048
[it was used ] to denote a character who was the embodiment of silly, predictable slapstick (much like Derpy).

I understand words can shift meaning, believe me. Gay no longer means female whore, for example, but it bugs me that SJ seems intent on giving all hateful people godlike powers. If anyone, anywhere ever uses a word negatively at any point in history it is now banned from the language forever and ever. I mean, geek used to be a very hurtful insult. In my father's day, that was used to taunt and degrade a lot of people. It is still used as an insult. A group at DragonCon were called geeks and nerds by football fans while the football fans threw eggs at them. How DARE you have that word as a username? Remember, hate is more powerful than love and friendship!

Oh, I don't think that a word has to be stricken from the lexicon forever just because it was ever used at any time to hurt another person. And I do think people go overboard with the "if even one person asks you to stop using a word because it offends them, why is it ~zomg soo haaaard~ to stop using that word?"
It's just that a fairly significant group of people point out, rightly so, that the word "derp" is used as a slur against disabled people (some brought up later in the thread the macros of mentally disabled people with DERP or HERPDERP written on them), and that this usage cannot be denied simply because the word wasn't *originally* aimed at disabled people.

Again, I don't necessarily agree that this means the word is off limits forever or anything, I just think it should be recognized that there is a legitimate reason to see it as (at least in some circumstances) a slur because it has actually been used as one. I don't even think "Derpy Hooves" is even so bad, but I can see how it's questionable and why it bothers some people.
