The wank I saw around the Internet was part of the reason I avoided it, too. I feel kind of silly for avoiding it because of the fans now (especially since there are a ton of really kick ass people in the fandom - you just obviously don't hear about them where wank is concerned). Glad I got over it, though, because it's one of my favorite shows of all time.

Season 4 is my absolute favorite season! They did an awesome job with the season long arc in that one and a lot of the episodes were great on their own.

I feel your pain, man. I keep telling myself I'm just going to put a moratorium on liking new characters on the off chance that maybe if I don't (or if I don't admit it aloud) they won't die/disappear. It hasn't been working so far.

Agreed! Enough fans of other fandoms I knew already were really what sold me on getting into the show initially when I caved actually.

Conversation I almost had with my guy: "If fandom friend A, B and C love this show so much, I'm willing to give it a shot, honey. Oh! I also trust your opinion of course! God this is came out awkwardly....Have I told you I loved you lately?" lol

I know, right?! I mean, Ash was the awesome anti-prototype character and then WHAM! Blown up. I wanted more of John, so nope, he's gone. Thought it would be cool to see this major show down between Dean/Bela (I have a thing so bitchy, smart bad girls that foil the good guy), so of course she dies off screen evidently because other fans didnt like her character taking away from Dean/Sam screen time. I'm dreading getting to the Jo and Ellen bits because I love both of them and the season six episode I caught on tv this week totally has me shipping Bobby/Ellen as these kickass/seen it all pseudo parents. -_-

I totally ended up caving for the same reason! So many of my friends with awesome taste were watching it that I figured it must be worth a shot. I still went in totally thinking I'd watch a couple of episodes just to see what the big deal was about... and then I ended up watching the first five seasons in like a month. Lol.

Augh, for real! There are honestly only two characters in the entire season that I've disliked, and even then they totally served their purpose and their characterization worked. It's just really, really hard not to love the supporting characters. Apparently as hard as it is for the writers not to kill them off. :| I loved Bela and, while the way they wrote her off worked for the plotline, I was super sad to hear her go. I keep hoping she'll show back up as a demon so we can have some more Dean/Bela snark. That episode in season six was awesome. Bobby/Ellen and their combined snark is just too amazing. The world needs more of it!

Oh my God. I think you're the only other Dean/Bela snarkfest fan I've ever met. Was t it awesome though? She'd make such a perfect demon, I shall hold out hope for that with you. Awkward Sam/Dean/Ruby/Bela would have been awesome. Boys would be in over their heads and Cas/Billy etc would all be very concerned. ^_^

There really needs to be a set AU where Billy/Ellen rule the roost of younger hunters and Dean/Sam/Jo have all kinds of bickering pseudo sibling interaction, and then the whole family kicks ass together. ♥

I actually have several friends who love Bela (and her and Dean's mutual hate-fueled snarkiness) - we do exist! Oh man, the bitching that would have gone on had Bela still been around when Ruby showed up. It would have been glorious! Ruby's another character that I love (in both incarnations), but a lot of people seem to hate her, too. And Meg. I love me some Meg. Apparently I have a thing for snarky characters with questionable morals. ~~Oh, wait, that's basically everyone on the show. Huh, no wonder.~~

I am actually kind of shocked that I haven't seen more fic set in the Titanic verse from that episode in season six. If you're into fic, there is a good deal out there (a lot of it AU, but some in canon, too) that has Bobby and Ellen set up as pseudo-parents for the boys and Jo, with lots of hunting and awesome shenanigans and other goings-on. Obviously, most of it is spoiler-laden, so you'll probably have to wait until you get caught up, but there's some awesome stuff out there (pairing-centric and gen and everything in-between).

Dude, rec me rec me rec me! I likely won't catch up for a while due to Real Life, and definitely want to keep up the Supernatural love. ♥

I loved Meg too! She kind of reminded me of Amanda from the Highlander television show originally and then grew into this whole interesting character all of her own. ~~Seriously the episode where her ghost showed up Bobby's house SO MANY FEELINGS.~~ I liked original!Ruby's actress better when they first made the switch, but I'm willing to give the newer one a chance.

...Actually now that I think about it I think I got more on board with liking Sam when he started interacting with Meg. Huh. Go figure.

Supernatural fandom seems to be so big I really have no idea where to start to find minor character love/people that write about the parts of the show I've loved the most/etc.

Oooh... anything in particular you're looking for when it comes to recs? Certain characters you want to see, pairings or gen, AU or Non-AU? There's a ton of stuff out there, which is awesome because it means variety, but also can be a bit overwhelming when you're first starting out in fandom.

Meg is a BAMF! She's honestly probably my favorite female character on the show and she easily makes my top 5 favorite characters for the series. ~~Oh man, that episode. ALL THE FEELINGS. I both love and hate how many feelings this show gives me.~~ It took me a bit to get used to Ruby 2.0, but she really hit her stride for me after a few episodes. It doesn't hurt that her actress is adorable irl and also married to Jared and they are one of the most adorable married couples ever.

Same here! I love Sam, but there are moments where I just really, really want to smack him. Same goes for Dean, but his seem to be a bit less often (and as an older sibling I'm probably biased in that I can relate to the whole big bro/sis mentality far too easily). And, well, Dean is just awesome and not-so-secretly one of my favorite characters ever, sooo...

It is really, really big. And totally intimidating at times, which is why I mostly lurk. If you want a good general comm for news (and that has great FFAs), you might check out

spn_party. It is probably the best place for all around news and updates, the people are all pretty friendly, and it's pretty wank-free overall. There's also

ontd_spnparty, which is the old comm that spn_party just took over for; it's closed, so there aren't any new posts or discussions going on, but it's a good place to look for old news and interviews and links (that haven't been killed by the demise of MU, at least) and to raid for gifs. Both comms are good about tagging spoilers, too! There's also a really big fanbase on tumblr, but it is SUPER spoilery, so definitely proceed with caution there. XD;
