Uh, she completely blocked her neglectful and abused childhood from her memory. She wasn't bitter, because she didn't know. After she remembered, she didn't feel like she could be bitter because it was brought up in the context of how much her brothers loved her.

Was it that she didn't know? I thought she was pretending not to know/ignoring it. The whole "repressed childhood memories" thing tends to be quack in RL.

The whole "repressed childhood memories" thing tends to be quack in RL

how is that relevant when we're talking about a fictional work?

"tends to be quack in RL"

Um, no? Cite your source, please.

I like her, but I kind of agree. She's nice, but I didn't find her very interesting in her own right.

I agree more could have been done with Himari, but I don't think she boils down just to "sweet and perfect". Look at the flashbacks to her with the Takakura family...that time when she was bratty over ribbons not being just right, she definitely wasn't being sweet and perfect then. But the results of that time probably scared her a lot. She's a very lonely character. She's probably hiding negative feelings about not becoming an idol with her friends: remember that she wasn't intending to send them the scarves, even after she spent so much time making them? I don't remember whether we were told if she's tried to contact them before. She might have, but it looks like either they parted on bad terms, or Himari felt too bad about herself and her family to try. Like the other Takakura siblings, she also tried to cover up the problems with their family. Although she did have her memories suppressed, I don't think that explains it all. There were certainly things she would have noticed that she never asked about for fear of breaking the family unit.

Himari also speaks in a very dirty way to the food she prepares. :p

I so wish we could have gotten to see more of goofy, dirty-talking Himari.

She's probably hiding negative feelings about not becoming an idol with her friends [...] she also tried to cover up the problems with their family

The thing is that's all ideal feminine behavior from a traditional Japanese POV: being unselfish and self-sacrificing and hiding your own pain to make other people happy. It kind of just emphasizes how perfect she is despite how hard her life has been. As for the ribbons thing - she was like what, 6. She was just being a child. She developed into this perfect little sister who is loved by all (and if they don't love her they're just jealous like Masako). Idk, I felt she was less a character and more a plot device for her brothers' development and it left a bad taste in my mouth.

I think she got enough character development in her own right, and personally I don't think either that she was only shown as a Japanese feminine ideal or that sharing elements of that would be reason to write her off as a character. What I don't like is that she wasn't given enough of a chance to actually do things. I suppose that given her health condition that would be hard, but still...I would have liked a more active role for her in the series' conclusion. She does get to go after Kanba, which is an active decision, but that's pretty much it. She was described in interviews as one of the two main protagonists of the series (along with Ringo), and I'd say it didn't turn out that way.

With the "perfection" thing, I think we're supposed to realise that she isn't actually perfect. There are a lot of facades in the Takakura family. Kanba and Shouma also spend plenty of time pretending that everything in the family is just fine when it isn't, and that's for Himari's sake (and their own, too).

She developed into this perfect little sister who is loved by all (and if they don't love her they're just jealous like Masako)

Well....I'd say that's an exaggeration. Who is actually shown as loving her? Her brothers, yes. Ringo likes her too. That's about it. It's not strange for brothers to love their little sister. Masako is also revealed as having a very good reason to dislike Himari and the "fake family" of the Takakuras. I don't know if her legit grievance there is as simple as being "just jealous".

Her past was kinda dark. She was very distant and given up on life until Shouma saved her from the Child Broiler. Then when she was adopted into the Takakura family she acted like a brat because the mom didn't buy her the right ribbons... then she was willing to kill a koi fish to heal the mom. We first see her as sweet and innocent then stuff like that comes up makes it a very sharp contrast.

Most of the show takes place while she is terminally ill and she knows how much her brothers love her and don't want her to die so of course she is not going to act bitter or scared because that would make it harder on them. She accepted her fate and wanted to live what's left of her life happily with her brothers.

If you ask me it wasn't as important to focus on Himari's view on her impeding death as it was how Shouma and Kanba deal with it. I do think more could have been done with Himari's character but she always seemed to care more about how her brothers felt than she did about dying. I never thought she was 'bland' though because she was always on deaths doorstep and only kept alive by a hat with two brothers constantly worried about her. I think her how her character was portrayed made sense for the story. Kanba and Shouma character development was the main focus and saving Himari was the goal.

Why? It struck me a lot as "female character as plot device to trigger male angst" tbh. It made sense for the story, but was a waste of her character.

...Also killing a koi doesn't seem terribly violent to me, lol. She's Japanese, she probably eats fish every day!

But they kind of did that plot twist with Kanba and his 'parents'. Also you should probably rewatch every scene with her and Sanetoshi alone.
