Wow.

... You know, I had a feeling it was going to suck in some manner. Sure, it got decent ratings on Rotten Tamatoes, but something about all the previews screamed "SOMETHING IS WRONG HERE" about it. Now that I know this, it's obvious. I had seen the actual story years ago on Animal Planet and the characters involved were all wrong.

I mean, seriously? Demonizing the Inupiat for whale hunting when such things are a part of their culture, when they don't treat the whale as a product like certain big businesses do? Ugh. That level of bullshit is making me sick just hearing about it.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-02 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
so they get a free pass for killing whales because it's their culture?

(Anonymous) 2012-03-02 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
Well yeah.

What are they going to eat and get energy from in freaking Alaska? Snow?

(Anonymous) 2012-03-02 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
This. We think certain food like mangoes are expensive because of the cost of importing. What they pay for food up there is ridiculous! If you can't afford it (most can't), then you rely and what you know to survive.

[identity profile] kindlycoyote.livejournal.com 2012-03-02 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
More like they get a free pass because they actually respect the animal, and (unless my research-fu has been weak in this instance) they don't kill enough of them to horribly impact the animal's population. We have other factors to thank for that!

Of course, I am one of those people who don't hunt myself, but respect those who do for sustenance and cultural reasons (where they actually use the animal instead of only using it for bragging rights). So, I am coming at it from a different place then some of what I consider the more extreme positions come from.

[identity profile] kikkyo.livejournal.com 2012-03-02 04:01 am (UTC)(link)
You're right. They have more of a natural relationship with their environment. They kill what they need when they need it and use every part of it they can rather than wasting. And the only harm they'd do to whale populations would be to cut back enough that the whales wouldn't start overpopulating and causing environmental problems themselves. I'm not into hunting either, but how else were people eating before we figured out the whole grocery store concept?

(Anonymous) 2012-03-02 04:20 am (UTC)(link)
they don't kill enough of them to horribly impact the animal's population.

Actually it really depends on what individuals are hunted too. Babies in particular - if you kill one baby a year, that has a far worse effect on the whale population than killing one adult. If a female can have 1 baby every 3 years for 30 years (which is conservative for humpback whale), she'd give birth to about 10 baby whales. If you kill her at a random point in her adult life, she probably would have had about 5 calves. If you killed her before she reached maturity, you'd be eliminating 10 baby whales instead of 5.

There's speculation that's what actually killed some of the large animals from the ice age - killing a baby once a year, not a huge slaughter.

[identity profile] marshwiggledyke.livejournal.com 2012-03-02 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
Whoa.

Absolutely agreed. I got that same feel while waiting for the Muppets to start, but was distracted by the massive suckitude of the next trailer (Chipwrecked) to remember it.

And you're absolutely right. It's because I'd seen it before. I read about it in a Time For Kids pamphlet when I was five, and cried because the baby whale died. What the fucking hell, movie.

[identity profile] kindlycoyote.livejournal.com 2012-03-02 03:17 am (UTC)(link)
Glad I'm not the only one who had the weird feeling. For anyone who is familiar with the actual story, the Hollywood mock-up is kinda insulting. I bet the baby whale doesn't even die in it. (Which, ok, annoys me because it is a awesome story anyway, and the baby whale dying shows that even when you do the right thing, the perfect outcome may not happen, but you still can do a lot of good. You just shouldn't be discouraged. But of course, Hollywood doesn't pay attention to any lessons and instead goes for the fluff.)

Plus, turning it into a romantic comedy like thing? What the fucking hell, indeed.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-02 03:27 am (UTC)(link)
The baby does die. Surprised me.

[identity profile] kindlycoyote.livejournal.com 2012-03-02 03:44 am (UTC)(link)
Well, at least there is that. Huh, that actually makes me feel a little better about Hollywood.

Not much better because of everything else, but still.

[identity profile] veronica-rich.livejournal.com 2012-03-04 06:38 am (UTC)(link)
Well, don't you know? Us wimminz won't go see a movie if there's no hint of dick-in-vagina. It's our purpose for existing, I mean.

(Sure, I write some romantic fanfic. Doesn't mean I want my other media all saturated with it. The reason I write it, in fact, is I want it written the way *I* like it, not what's presented much of the time to me.)

[identity profile] streetcake.livejournal.com 2012-03-02 02:54 am (UTC)(link)
I saw that saw the story on Animal Planet about a year ago, and what really sucks is that they worked so hard to cut out the ice and save those whales and this is what they get? Hollywood is so deranged.

[identity profile] kindlycoyote.livejournal.com 2012-03-02 03:20 am (UTC)(link)
I know, right? Instead it looks like they traded in most of what was awesome about it instead to make a fluffy romantic comedy like thing-a-ma-bob. Of course, I haven't actually seen it so I could be wrong, but that is what the trailer was saying. (I shall now browse the internet to see if I am right or wrong.)

It would have been a lot more interesting if instead of all the fluff, they showed exactly how hard it was for the actual people to be out there, day after day. But nope! WE NEED SUNSHINE AND FLUFF.

[identity profile] streetcake.livejournal.com 2012-03-02 03:28 am (UTC)(link)
Pff, if I remember correctly in the trailer I think the kid dives into the water wearing nothing but a scuba suit. Obviously they aren't going for serious, or they're just complete morons(probably both).

Yes, the original story was very inspiring already! Even though the baby died, the story still warmed my heart to see the Inupiat people go out of their way and do back-breaking labor to save the other two whales.

[identity profile] kindlycoyote.livejournal.com 2012-03-02 03:47 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah. It's just... the amount of white-washing and cuddlyfying is making me a little sick, actually. Like when I hear about the Crazy Horse memorial (The hills are sacred and shouldn't be carved at all! WTF.).

Urgh, I need to pop in a good movie to clear the brooding this news is brings up.
