Oh my gosh, this. I saw this story before this movie came out, and I was already rolling my eyes at how they changed it. I didn't know they made the original heroes the villains, though. Wow, if I ever wanted a movie to bomb solely on the fact that I didn't see it, this would definitely one of them.

I wouldn't say that they were made the villains. It's just that this movie is showing how media coverage influenced what action was taken in rescuing these whales. One of the actions that was being talked about was the local tribe killing the whales because 1) the whales were trapped and expected to die and 2) the were short on their whale quota. They ended up (obviously) choosing not to do this and after that decision was made they put all of their effort into helping to save the family of whales.

Personally, I felt they did a good job of showing the different sides of the story - even if the white characters and their relationships were highlighted more.

Well I haven't seen it so I can't talk about how they handled it, but even before I heard about this the movie still bothered me. Since I knew the story beforehand, seeing them place a pretty white family in the lead and overall idealizing the story was extremely off-putting.

I understand. I was about to pull my hair out with frustration, so this actually makes me feel a bit better.
