i think it's more that i'm fond of the idea of eccentrics being a product of extreme normalcy. and also of the idea of mycroft and sherlock having to figure out very early that they were not quite like the average person. usually, when the parents are "peculiar" too, it softens the blow. i like the idea that mycroft and sherlock had the full blow.
