Actually, OP, I completely agree with you. I mean, it's a little nice to be fav'd regardless. But when I look at someone's profile and they have 5000+ "favorites," it kind of takes some of the shiny away.

[identity profile] barnabys-bane.livejournal.com 2012-03-07 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
Same.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-07 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe they just read a lot more than the average person?

But yeah, I kind of agree.

[identity profile] metaraymek.livejournal.com 2012-03-07 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
I'm pretty much in agreement.

For a while there, I got bookmarks from some people who had even 4k bookmarks/favorites worth of stories. It was amusing at first, but then I began to wonder if they bookmarked just on the summary alone and never bothered reading anything after that, lmao.

[identity profile] krillia.livejournal.com 2012-03-07 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
I've always assumed that people like that bookmarked things they think look interesting and that they'll read when they get the chance, as opposed to bookmarking things they like and think they might read again someday/want other people to see they like.

(no real reason for this icon other than it seeming a good pair with yours)

[identity profile] rightcyclone.livejournal.com 2012-03-07 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
It's possible to have that many favorites on fanfiction.net? I favorite things I enjoy reading and will want to read again for easy access, and it won't let me favorite more than 90. Once I hit that, it makes me delete some before I can add more.

[identity profile] phyllomania.livejournal.com 2012-03-07 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
I have a story up there which has been favorites by five people. Three of them have over 1000 favorite stores: 4012, 1294, 3199.

I kind of agree with OP. It's the other two (370 and 40 favorites, respectively) that make me feel like I actually wrote something of merit. Even if I don't actually like the fic in question.

[identity profile] rightcyclone.livejournal.com 2012-03-07 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
Weird... And yeah, I like the favorites by pickier people, too, not that I get many (also, I haven't written anything in years).

[identity profile] ryouseiteki.livejournal.com 2012-03-07 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
I devour fic and have like a bajillion bookmarked in firefox but nothing on ao3 and my ff.net is outdated (I kind of ran away from it screaming a few years back and only follow a few trusted authors there now). So I'm one of those people and also not since you'd never know haha. Still, I see what you're getting at. I don't have enough stuff to feel that way but if I keep writing I might; as it is, I'm just excited when anyone looks at my stuff at all. XD

[identity profile] cloud-riven.livejournal.com 2012-03-07 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
I must look like a total elitist critic you'd approve of!

Actually, the truth is that I bookmark a fuckton, but my bookmarking habits are completely disorganised. Occasionally I'll mark something on AO3 or FF.net because I have the completely warranted paranoia that I'll be switching browsers or computers and will lose track of it. So far they're all spread through Firefox (on two different laptops), Opera (old laptop, and mobile), DolphinHD (mobile), Chrome because I was using it as my default for a while for some reason, .txt files with lists of links (also on two different laptops), some archived emails, some lj memories, and a Delicious where I thought it was a great idea to remove all my tags. It's not just limited to fic, but also general bookmarking :(

Eventually I'm going to consolidate this mess into my virgin pinboard. And then I can publicly join these plebes of yours 8)

you sounds like me, bmark-wise. I contain multitudes, all over the place.

[identity profile] visp.livejournal.com 2012-03-07 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
I look at the other favorites on whoever's favorited me and try and decide if I objectively think they have good taste, or if my stuff really is crap. I consider it to be a valid self-evaluation.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-07 03:40 am (UTC)(link)
Ditto on this.

Except I get really confused when there's my longfic where the most the pairing does is kiss, next to about a hundred PWPs of varying quality. Does that mean my fic is good...? Or that they haven't read it and just think it has the potential for porn because it's rated M?
ext_74116: (Default)

[identity profile] visp.livejournal.com 2012-03-07 04:53 am (UTC)(link)
Or that they have varying tastes. I have exceptions to my general preferences if something's good.

[identity profile] wolfie.livejournal.com 2012-03-07 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
This. :/

[identity profile] inboots.livejournal.com 2012-03-07 02:12 am (UTC)(link)
why 30, op? you sound like you gave this a thought, so i doubt it's arbitrary.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-07 03:59 am (UTC)(link)
It's not arbitrary, but nor does it have a particularly strong reason. It's a couple a month, and was the average of the favorite number of fics of people who made me feel happy when I looked. It's just that "about" or "approximately" looked weird in the text of the secret (which was already threatening to be a text wall).

[identity profile] billybobfred0.livejournal.com 2012-03-07 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
You've put a lot of thought into just how many bookmarks someone can make before they're bookmarking just any old thing, haven't you?

(Anonymous) 2012-03-07 04:58 am (UTC)(link)
I don't have anything close to 5000 favorites but after after doing some quick counting I've concluded that I bookmark about 10 fics a month, now I love all of the fics that I've saved but I also use my bookmarks as a place to put 'fics to read later' lest I forget the name/address of them. Maybe some (but probably not all) that have so many bookmarks do something similar?

In either case, I can understand why it might feel underwhelming when something like that happens :)

(Anonymous) 2012-03-07 07:03 am (UTC)(link)
Well I guess I'm not counted. I easily read 2-3 fics a week. Sometimes more, sometimes less depending on the length and how easy it is to read. They're not short stories either, I tend to go for the ones over 30k

I just hope you're not someone I've bookmarked, as that'd be a real downer to realise an author I enjoy would be ~less proud~ of me because apparently my value of your worth is measured by all the other stories and books I've read.

Way to make the reader feel like they're only decent and not special.

:/

Does this mean all the books I've read per year are only special or valued if I read 30? If I read the 50+ I normally average at - well I guess all the books were just decent and not special to me!

Seriously, what a dick thing to assume.

I really really hope you're not an author I have bookmarked. I would remove you so fast because this secret would just ruin you and your fics for me.

[identity profile] lovelycudy.livejournal.com 2012-03-07 04:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I have to agree with this. And this is from someone who has only bookmarked 32 fics in 4 years in FF.net because I prefer Delicious.

[identity profile] green-glee.livejournal.com 2012-03-07 05:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Well maybe your tastes DO suck.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-07 08:14 am (UTC)(link)
Yes!!! I completely feel the same way....
This is also the reason I try to not bookmark so many fic and keep it only for the ones I really think are good and that I relate too.

[identity profile] lovelycudy.livejournal.com 2012-03-07 04:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I've never checked the people who put any of my fics in "favourite"... It seems pointless, I guess. They like what they like and I am happy they like what I wrote. That's it.
