I'm not even in the fandom, but someone please link to the tumblr fallout :D . Drama over a fic? Pretty please!
Looked at it and well, not my cup of tea, but each to their own. It baffles me how did it get 2000 reviews. HOW!? I bet it's the Sparks-factor.
I'm not infor fandom wars, but I can totally see the "rite of passage" fic - Inception has this cafe thingy, Merlin has the modern monarchy piece and that's all I can name for now.

[identity profile] saya22.livejournal.com 2012-03-07 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, all fandoms/sub-fandoms have rite of passage fics. Back when Blaine came out in Glee Dalton is the must-read fic and Klainers were crazy about it just like the tween Sherlock fans go crazy about Alone, tweeting the fic to the actors and writers and so forth. I'm sure every fandom has one.

Dalton is bad, btw. And I've come to despise Blaine and Glee, so yeah.

[identity profile] greeneyed.livejournal.com 2012-03-07 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
Oh Blaine, I don't need any fic to help me not like him.
I'm now looking at said Dalton and it has a whopping 7000 reviews :O ! Daaamn, I usually consider anything above 10 a success. I looked at tumblr tags for alone and the Anons above were right, a parade of crying gifs.

[identity profile] saya22.livejournal.com 2012-03-07 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
Ugh, Blaine's character is such a joke by now, I can't believe they keep shoving him solos in every episode. His show faces is worse than Rachel, and that's saying, something.

[identity profile] velvet-mace.livejournal.com 2012-03-07 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
It got 2000 views because of Tumblr. A rec on tumblr is a powerful, powerful thing.

[identity profile] greeneyed.livejournal.com 2012-03-07 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
And here I thought that tumblr is mostly for drama, gifs and bad art while it's busy taking over the world D: .

[identity profile] dreamingrain.livejournal.com 2012-03-07 12:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Chameleon got rec'd on Tumblr a bit back and now it's on my dash whenever you update - which is fine by me. It means I don't have to check back all that often - someone will just let me know.

[identity profile] velvet-mace.livejournal.com 2012-03-08 06:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes and it's now getting, no exaggeration, more than 10 times the comments it used to. This is how I know Tumblr has a huge, huge, huge audience.

[identity profile] deadtree.livejournal.com 2012-03-07 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
I can't say I've ever read a "rite of passage" fic, I guess. Maybe it's because I don't use tumblr, I never know what those are... and tbh that's okay, lol.

A lot of fandoms definitely have a rite of passage fic, but I think, merits of bakery!au's aside, both of those could actually be considered semi-quality writing and they were actual epics, not 10k things. Like, I never liked that Merlin one, but it was by no means a bad fic. The fact that Sherlock fandom chose Alone on the Water out of all the lovely fic in fandom has me so baffled.

[identity profile] saya22.livejournal.com 2012-03-07 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
If there's one Sherlock fic series I'd wish is a must read it's the Horse and Carriage series. Lovely characterization and well-developed.

Link?

Asexual!Sherlock proposes to John. Mostly I love it because I'm ace and that's my idea of a perfect relationship.

[identity profile] greeneyed.livejournal.com 2012-03-07 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
So it was a bakery? I have a poor memory. I admit I judged both stories according to which I would original writing - I remember almost nothing about Inception and never watched Merlin. The bakery one was okay, but not really memorable, not to mention the suggestion that someone trying to make a partner is a workaholic and should make cakes instead. I liked the monarchy one much more - it was funny and I enjoyed it till the whole public outing (got dull). Okay, I shouldn't probably pay this much attention to fics ;) . I read a grand total of one Sherlock fics and it was an excerpt of a chat log.

[identity profile] rabidsamfan.livejournal.com 2012-03-07 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
I've seen authors consistently recommended (Katie Forsythe anyone?) for canon Sherlockian slash, but I can't think of any one fic that gets treated like it is a requirement. Ditto for Lord of the Rings, so I don't think every fandom has a "rite of passage" fic.

Then again, when I was still wandering around HP fandom, I kept getting told to read "My Immortal" and it was the kind of fic I wouldn't (and didn't) give 5 seconds to before hitting the back button, parody or not, so that's not a great incentive to remember if I had seen a fic recommended as a requirement.

[identity profile] greeneyed.livejournal.com 2012-03-07 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
They were trolling you :P, this thing is only used for quotes. I got the "rite of passage" impression from HP fandom - almost each pairing had its own. It was in early 2000s, so it may have changed now, but I remember this horribly OOC story with Draco and Hermione where he angsted all the time and she was adopted.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-07 03:38 am (UTC)(link)
for some reason (I've never heard of Katie Forsythe) I interpreted your comment to mean like "there is canon Sherlockian slash" rather than "this is slash about book!canon Sherlock".
I got all excited for nuthin

(Anonymous) 2012-03-07 08:15 am (UTC)(link)
You still sometimes get the groupthink even sans rites of passage. I happened to mention at a con that I found some of katieforsythe's characterization a bit ? and the temperature in the room perceptibly dropped, with sideeyes galore. Won't make that mistake again.

My Immortal was a great big ol joke to fandom.

[identity profile] rabidsamfan.livejournal.com 2012-03-07 01:07 pm (UTC)(link)
*grin* Oh, yes, Katie can get a bit schmoopy, especially when she's writing established relationship fic, but she does have a lovely way of writing. And schmoop is a pitfall waiting whenever someone is taking on romance. (One of the reasons I love a good gen fic, by any author, is that the characterization of Holmes tends to be more like my head-canon. Watson, of course, is allowed to be a romantic, just not a gooey one.

My Immortal wasn't even funny. Just bad.

[identity profile] rocketgirl2.livejournal.com 2012-03-07 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
Merlin has a rite-of-passage fic, really? I must've missed that...

[identity profile] karuvapatta.livejournal.com 2012-03-07 03:33 am (UTC)(link)
That would probably be Drastically Redefining Protocol (http://archiveofourown.org/works/3189) (at least I think so, judging from the comments here).

[identity profile] greeneyed.livejournal.com 2012-03-07 04:34 am (UTC)(link)
Yup, that one, I came upon it recced in an original stories community.
