From what I understand, they did in other parts of the world.

I think they stuck to 'Karate Kid' for the English-speaking audiences because they were hoping to tap into the built-in fanbase for the originals. Not a damn thing gets made these days if Hollywood isn't assured the potential audience is HUGE. Elsewhere, not such a strong following, let 'The Kung-Fu Kid' rise or fall on its own merits.
