Hmm, let me think how to explain this.

When a fandom first starts out or is fairly small, everything is shiny and new and exciting. It's pretty easy to find a place to fit in, figure out where to look for good fanworks and discussion. But the more popular something becomes, the more likely nasty cliques are bound to form, idiots become more vocal, people jump in the fandom just because it's popular, etc. Seeing people bring up the same, tired, fandom-splitting topics, ship-wars, or "YOU'RE DOING IT WRONG" arguments can get irritating. That's when a certain kind of bitterness starts to leak out in one's attitude, and fandom can become overwhelming, and, well, not fun anymore.
