Well, it's a matter of taste. I like it, you don't.

Frankly for me, it's because I love the superflat animation and the descriptive animation for how cats move. It reminded me of Mamoru Hosoda's work, and the way that the movie eases effortlessly from a slice-of-life story to the fantastical. Admittedly, it kind of loses the charm around the labyrinth (dull, dusty brown colors are not fun to look at), but I love it anyway. (It helps that I ship cat!Haru/Muta, lol)

Those backgrounds are also gorgeous.

Speaking of which, your secret is kind of hard on the eyes, btw...

huh, i find it interesting many people think its one of the best. I thought it was a really fun movie and ive seen it many times, but one of the best? Probably not. Just sort of a fun little "be yourself" type movie I guess

Sorry OP. I thought it was a cute movie. Plus I liked the art style a lot. I'm with marshwiggledyke on this that I like super flat colors and simple animation, on top of the super detailed works that's usually the Ghibli fare.

Watch its prequel, Whisper of the Heart, instead. It has almost nothing to do with TCR and is very sweet.

I love Whisper of the Heart . I've been meaning to rewatch it sometime soon. I think it's probably my favorite of the lesser known Ghibli films.

OP - I've watched it, Whisper of the Heart is actually one of my favourite Ghibli movies :) I'm just glad I watched it AFTER seeing the Cat Returns (I didn't know there was a connection between them, so i watched them in the wrong order)

Like everyone else has said, it's fun!

About the lack of depth, occasionally a shallower, fun movie is the sort of thing I want to watch! I agree the people did look a little derpy, but it made Haru's facial transformation into a cat a little easier and by then the cats were great, I thought, so that didn't end up bothering me either. I was too busy enjoying it!

It's just a matter of different tastes. I love the movie, personally. I even have a formerly-fat cat named Muta and a regal kitty named Baron Reginald von Fluffytrousers the Third, aka Baron.

I just think it's a cute movie. I like it quite a bit and it's a good movie to share with my nieces and nephews (they get a kick out of the cats acting like humans).

I really love it. It's not the deepest movie ever, but it's a sweet story with fun characters and it's just pretty charming.

Which version did you see?

I usually prefer subs, but this was one of the very few things where I thought the English cast made it 10x better.

Because of the light-hearted films, it was one of the best--funny, simplistic and very well dubbed. It wasn't meant to be a deep film like Mononoke, Nausicaa, etc---Cat Returns fits in better along the lines of Ponyo, Totoro, Porco Rosso(?); just a fun, laid-back film aimed more at teens/young adults as opposed to small children (though children enjoy it too!).

If you want a more dramatic version, read the manga. Shit gets a little more ballsy there.

Porco Rosso doesn't quite fit in to either of those categories, its sort of an oddball of a Miyazaki movie, and definitely one adults would appreciate more than teens. It's actually one of my favorites, and anyone who hasn't watched it should :).
