Apart from how annoying it is and how much it tends to ruin everything that was good about the character in the first place, it pisses me off because I always wind up arguing with people that "no, no, character X is actually a giant fucking asshole and not at all a nice innocent guy like you're saying. How the hell is he a nice guy? Look at all the horrible shit he did" instead of discussing how cool/fascinating/likable character X is while taking his assholery as a given. And doing that is unpleasant when I actually like character X and don't really enjoy dumping on him due to his blatantly obvious assholery when I'd rather be discussing his gazillion other traits.
