Damon isn't a nice guy and he isn't out to change out of a desire or need for redemption. He's just doing it because of Elena, because she doesn't like the darker stuff. It's something that I do keep in mind about him. One of the things about the show is that it just moves too fast for them to be concerned about how Damon has the dark history. The story needs him on speaking terms with Elena and the others, so they barrel right past it. And, since the show does, the fangirls feel he's forgiven.
