If my mother never worked a day in her life I personally wouldn't want to see her start. I mean, doesn't every child want their parents to live out old age in ease?

If my rich, proud mother would have had to become a seamstress or something it would have broken my heart, even if she DID need a reality check and a major change of attitude.

But then I'm a momma's girl, so.

Considering my dad wanted to be taken care of at the expense of others? Nope.

And my mom, as much as I love her, NEEDS to get a job. I refuse to become her crutch, which is what will happen once I find myself one. We're both pretty poor right now and she's living off the government and I'm still living at home cause jobs out here suck. But. We have FedEx here and we BOTH can get jobs there.

So...TL;DR: Sure, it'd be nice if they got a nice, cushy end, but at the expense of MY life? Nope. Not at all.

No, I agree with you on that. If it meant that I'd have to break my back to support her I'd make her get a job, too, regardless how much it distresses me. And I also wouldn't put myself in Rose's position for her sake, either. But then, my mom would never ask for that, so.

I'm mainly commenting on this portion of Anon's comment (mainly the tone of it): Uh, lady, most people don't get to not work the fuck at all.

It's not something I'd ever be able to think about my mom. But then my mom is awesome, so it's probably easier for Rose to think something along those lines. Which I can't remember if she did or not.

I agree with this to a degree. Who here would want their mom to go from an office job to flipping burgers? I know I'd try to prevent that. That's essentially the same shift.

Would your mom tell you it's your duty to sell yourself to an abusive man to keep her from flipping burgers though? The context makes Rose's choice a bit different from a modern woman's.

No, "something I don't like" could refer to you having to quit stage band to babysit a younger sibling after school while mom works late.

We're talking about a woman who thinks her daughter should sell herself into a lifelong abusive marriage because Mom would be embarrassed to take in sewing and not be admitted to the right drawing rooms. And probably won't fully appreciate the sacrifice because she maybe doesn't think abuse is something women really have the right to complain about.
