LOL! I've heard it a few times back when I was a kid but I'm more like you, thinking it just doesn't make sense! Wtf... there's so much life to live once you're out from under your parents.

I like to think it's some form of selective amnesia. For example, they remember "when I lived with my parents I didn't have to work and I had a lot more free time to play video games, but now I have to work 50 hours a week at a job I hate, I'm exhausted, I never have any time for myself and my interests" but not all the rules, the fact that school is a major responsibility at least if you want to do well - which is another thing people forget, how hard concepts were at the time you were learning them, only thinking of them as how hard they are for an adult - curfews, limited funds, probably not having the freedom to sleep over at a lover's house if you want to, etc.
It all varies by situation but typically living without parents is far more satisfying to the human locus of control than living with them.
