OP also seems to be under the impression that in Rose's place, she would've gotten free and easy access to all the money she wanted AND been able to do what she wanted to with it. HAHA NO. Life for rich married women didn't work quite that way then. Basically it just meant as long as you kept yourself in enough favor not to be divorced (by the man, who had the money and the only means to hire a lawyer, unless your parents had money too) and Hubby didn't lose his money, you didn't have to worry about starving.
