For me, the fact that my "youth" (I say that loosely, because obviously being in my 20s, I'm still pretty young by some standards) wasn't all that accomplished makes thinking about the passage of time a even harder for me. I feel like I've used up so much time in my life just getting to a point where I can lead a productive adult life. I know my childhood and adolescence were valuable, but it's hard not to be like, 'Damn, how did I spend 18+ years just on that?'

That definitely makes sense. Of course, what you find out is that everybody probably feels like that at different times in their life. Maybe there are some people who have schedules they stick to--I met one once and it was weird--but for most people there's always going to be times when you feel like you've just figured out something you'd like to do and omg, you've wasted all this time and you're only just starting it now!

So a lot of those people who are "on track" might eventually see all the stuff they've been doing as on the wrong track and they have to start again. It seems like life's starting to naturally shake out that way now that people are living longer. It's not longer strange to have more than one career, for instance. Life for most people is probably down to a serious of accidents that led them to a place they didn't expect.

Also, re: silliness as adults, I remember a party I went to once where a bunch of guys I was friends with in high school were there, though we were now adults. They were acting the same as always, and at one point one of them had poured all this random liquor into a tall glass and was trying to trick another one into drinking it. It was stupid, and the type of thing you could easily be doing at 15 or whatever. So the guy drank some of it and was grossed out and it was ridiculous etc. And when everyone had stopped laughing there was a pause and then someone asked the guy who'd just played this stupid trick what hospital he worked at now--because when he wasn't playing immature pranks he was a surgeon.

Sometimes being a grown up just makes it funnier.
