I feel like crying just thinking about that. It's a great book, but... there's a reason I've only read it once.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-10 03:23 am (UTC)(link)
OP

It's my favorite book, but I always have to skip that bit. Sometimes when I feel like I can handle it, I go back and read that one part, but I always get angrytears.

Of course, I know they put a lot of pets down during the Blitz, but Gyp was put down out of selfishness (or maybe old age, as the whole thing is told from Laurie's perspective part of the fun is picking out what REALLY is going on). And my father refused to put my dog down even though he was dying slowly of liver cancer, and was clearly very unhappy, 'until the dog can't walk anymore'.

As a direct result of that, my dog fell down the stairs one day when everyone was out because he'd lost all his muscle mass and couldn't even lift his head anymore. I'd never been so furious at my father in my life. My teeth were chattering, that's how angry I was at his selfishness over a pet's health and happiness.

But it was the best way he could have gone, really. It was a very sunny, warm day and my father finally took in enough of my incoherent screaming to have the vet make a housecall and we did it outside, and it was over so quick. I dug the hole, and just felt relieved that he wasn't hurting anymore.

TLDR This book makes me have Feelings.

Reading your story made me feel really bad, NGL. Especially because I was at the opposite spectrum when my dog was put down -- my parents took the decision, even though I argued and screamed and cried. I still feel that it was the wrong choice; sure, she walked a bit slow and slept a lot, but she wasn't in pain or sick and... I don't know. Maybe I was selfish, I just -- I still miss her, years later.

OP

Awww, don't feel bad!

If a pet isn't in pain or sick and can still get about and do that big doggy smile at you, then I see no reason to put that pet down. I fear pain more than dying, which was definitely influencing my reasons for wishing to put my dog down. When my spaniel gets sad and skeletal and won't eat and just poops and poops... I think it's time.

It's also helpful to remember that everyone has different perspectives on death, and different reactions to it. If your pet was just elderly, you were not being selfish in kicking up a fuss like that.

I think I've actually read more Charioteer fanfic than the amount of times I've read the original book- does Laurie get a puppy by the end, or is that just fanon's opinion?

I just realized I never said how sorry I was to hear about your puppy's death. :( *hugs*

this secret alone made me tear up. :C my cat is starting to get a little older, and the thought of her getting sick is always really upsetting to me, because my first cat passed at around eight years old. he got cancer and it spread super quick, and he was seriously just acting funny one day and then gone not even two weeks later. i remember the last time i saw him, how thin and frail he had gotten, and how miserable he looked at first but he purred really loudly when i petted him for a while. they gave me his collar and i never saw him again, and i don't know if he passed naturally or if my parents made the decision to put him to sleep (i could ask, but i'm not sure i want to know). either way, i wasn't there, and it's really unsettling to think of the circumstances under which my current cat would have to be put down, but this secret really hit me hard because you're absolutely right-- i'd want her to pass on peacefully in a familiar environment with people she knows and loves, not super stressed out after a car ride that made her sick and in a place where she's already terrified and horribly unhappy while strangers attend to her.

OKAY I AM GOING TO SOUND REALLY CRAZY HERE FOR A SECOND.. but as i was writing this comment, i saw something out of the corner of my eye, turn, and see what appears to be an all white cat outside the back window. it paused and we stared at each other for about three seconds, and i turned on the outside light to try and see it again. i couldn't find it for a minute so i was seriously freaking out thinking i saw ~A GHOST CAT~ until he hopped up on the fence and into my neighbor's yard. ghost cat, as it turns out, is a ginger. whoops.

it's really unsettling to think of the circumstances under which my current cat would have to be put down, but this secret really hit me hard because you're absolutely right-- i'd want her to pass on peacefully in a familiar environment with people she knows and loves, not super stressed out after a car ride that made her sick and in a place where she's already terrified and horribly unhappy while strangers attend to her.

NGL, the first time I listened to the Charioteer- book on tape in the car on a long road trip, and I got to the part in the Charioteer where Laurie figures out that his dog has been dead for a while now and considers the dog's point of view, I started crying so hard I had to pull over on the side of the highway, because I honestly could not see for all the tears.

And yes, he was absolutely right- I needed to consider how to put down my dog for my dog's best interest, without panicking him or making his last moments miserable, which would upset me by proxy, and make letting him go emotionally far more difficult. I'm just really glad his last moments of consciousness were of sunlight and me rubbing the spot on his ear that he loves. It's upsetting to think about the day your pets will no longer be here and I hope you will not take this as creepy, but I wish after a long, healthy, lazycat life (which can last 20 years?), that your cat goes peacefully in your own house. *hugs*

Whoa, randomcat in the window.

Ghost cats exist; I've met a couple. This one obviously wasn't one but the timing was nice, ha ha.

One I just saw once; one I lived with for about a year.

The one I saw just once, I was in a friend's bedroom borrowing her sewing machine when I realized I was being watched, turned, and caught a glimpse of a tabby sitting very calmly behind me watching me. I finished what I was doing, went out, found my friend, and asked if she'd ever had a tabby cat (I knew she didn't have one then; besides, it didn't move; it just wasn't there anymore when I looked full at it). And she said that she had, years ago, but that it had died.

"Well, it was just in the bedroom keeping an eye on me," I told her. I think she liked that it was still keeping her company.

The other one was a ghost cat that haunted a house I lived in. We had a couple of cats too (who didn't seem at all concerned about the third non-coporeal one), and sometimes a cat would jump up onto my bed in the middle of the night, curl up behind my legs, and start purring. I'd invariably reach down to pat it, and sometimes there would be a cat there, and sometimes there wouldn't.

I found out later talking to the previous renters (my roomie was their cousin) that the cat had gotten out one day and run over on the highway outside. It had slept with the kids; I had taken over what had been their room.

I must say, I always enjoyed having the little ghost cat curled up with me, keeping me company.

One of my cats stuck around my family's condo after he died. I kept seeing him out of the corner of my eye (he was a scaredy-cat) until we moved.
