You really have to ask why someone might not enjoy watching a character get constantly mocked, dismissed, bullied, and treated like crap for no reason? It doesn't ruin the show for me personally because I can laugh at that kind of humor, but you honestly don't see how someone, somewhere, could have a problem with that?

what makes it semi-palatable for me is that they also drop all these hints that his life outside of work is pretty freaking awesome.

That's what made it more bearable for me. At first I was so sad for him, but now it seems like no one likes Jerry but he has this awesome life and huge dick so he doesn't even give a fuck. Have we ever seen his wife? I bet she's really hot.

That's why I think it's one of those cases where the joke is actually everybody making fun of this awesome, happy guy with a wonderful life and a great attitude. Or, I've convinced myself of that because otherwise Gerry mocking would still be my least favourite part of the show.

That used to entertain me, but I think the joke's been run into the ground. That episode where everyone tried not to make fun of him started off really well, then the bit where he bent over, tore his pants, and farted just... felt so cruel to me. I was dying of embarrassment for him, and I haven't enjoyed the running gag since then.
