See, I don't mind the practice of grabbing a jossed fanfic (Or even an unjossed one), giving it a good rework and turning it into a good book. Or a half-good book. Or even a mediocre book. IMHO, it's your setting, it's your work, and if you can manage to erase or at least modify the original template enough, well, my blessings to you!

(It might come from the fact that I'm a big fan of reimagining stories. Salem's Lot by King is an american AU of Dracula, in his own words, Alan Moore's League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, and so on. If the writing is good, or at least entertaining, I'm ok with it)

So yeah, I agree with you.

But there's this absurd idea that you can just search and replace names and ta-da! Instant original book that I just can't comprehend because as I said... well, it might be an excellent story, but obviously you didn't get the voices of the characters remotely close to right if they could be Alice, Bob and Mike instead of Hermione, Harry and Ron and no one bats an eye. So they might be glorious stories, but... not good fanfic (I also make this distinction with movies. A good movie, is not a good adaptation necesarily and so on)

I don't think you and I disagree in any really significant way. The people that I was arguing with were all the ones who were saying that it was illegal and immoral and likely to attract the attention of TPTB and make them take our fun away, because that's just ridic. If you make it more, rather than less, possible for TPTB to ignore what you're doing without risk of getting in trouble for not defending their copyright when someone does something really obnoxious, they're not going to bother themselves about it. Especially not Stephenie Meyer or JKR who are already rolling in buckets of money, are in no risk of losing their brand, and have better ways to occupy their time.
