Canada's Worst Driver (haven't seen other versions) has some good advice on things like this. Eps up on YouTube.
Essentially, pull up next to the car you want to park behind, until your rear bumpers are even.
Turn your wheel all the way to the right (left if you're in a drive-on-the-left country), and slowly back up until you're at a 45-degree angle to the curb.
Straighten out your wheels and go straight back until your front bumper clears their rear bumper.
Turn your wheel all the way to the left (or right if d-o-t-l etc) and back up until you're in the spot.
You need to be no more than a foot/30 cm from the curb, so if you're too far out just do S-turns* until you're there.
Parallel parking, I find, is easiest in small cars where you can see the two curb-side corners easily. If I'm dealing with rack-and-pinion steering on the pickup and trying to see the bumpers of cars much lower than I am then often I will give up and find somewhere easier to park. Not because I can't do it, but because it'll take half an hour of frustration.
Hey, here's a tip! If you're parking in town, sometimes you can catch your reflection in a shop window next to you and use that to see how much space is between you and the next car. :-)
*S-turns: Pull back as far as you can. Turn your wheels all the way towards the direction you want to go (in this case the curb) and pull forward for half of the space you have to work with. Stop, turn your wheels all the way over the other way, pull ahead the rest of the way.
Back straight up.**
Rinse, repeat, until you're where you want to be. :-)
** You can also point the wheels towards where you want to go, back up halfway, turn them all the way in the other direction, back up the rest of the way, and do that instead of going straight back. More complicated but gets you there quicker. :-)
