(Anonymous) 2012-03-12 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)The sci-fi elements of Dirk vary depending on episode (rather than a straight adaptation, its a "based on the characters and setting created by" style reboot in the same vein as Sherlock), and there are masses and masses of references to all Douglas Adams works including H2G2 and Dr Who. The music on this week's episode was awesome with hints of Baker, Tom's Dr Who and the BBC H2G2 series. But there were masses and masses of small references, and even a tip of the hat to the rebooted BSG as well. It's a lighter, yet darker, slightly twisted, sci-fi, detective, lovestory, type of procedural. With Brie. It's the least controversial of the cheeses.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-12 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)I think the two shows are perfect reflections of each other. Both have the anti-social, disengaged from reality, genius ditz, as their main. Both have a steady, albeit somewhat hapless (and hopeless in love) sidekick to help them show off (and to smooth over the bits of life that those disconnected from reality cannot manage), both have leads with curly hair. Just they go about it in such different ways, where Sherlock is aloof and distant, Dirk is passionate and throws himself gleefully in. Sherlock won't move without the evidence, Dirk sees everything as evidence for something and cheerfully makes it connect. One looks for evidence to support his theory, the other picks a theory that suits his evidence. The reflection is even apparent in the sidekick dynamic. Sherlock seems to tower over Watson (he is operating over Watson's head), but MacDuff is the taller and is like boat being constantly rocked by the smaller Dirk.
I would love to see a crossover, because while I think MacDuff and Watson would get on fine, swapping stories of barely platonic love and frustrated admiration that they could never admit to, Dirk and Sherlock would be engaged in an epic screaming tantrum at each other.
Sherlock: The mud under his shoes indicates a certain type of stone used in the East End, Stratford to be exact area, and the way he has folded his sleeve means he is a frequent visitor to building sites. Even you have to realise what this means.
Dirk: Yes, we have to go to Aberdeen!
Sherlock:ABERDEEN!?
Dirk: Its where the sandwiches went to.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-13 01:24 pm (UTC)(link)Dirk:Nothing IS IRRELEVANT, and they have a park for redevelopment in Aberdeen too. The sandwiches could be the key to the whole case.
Sherlock: There is no key, the solution is obvious.
Dirk: Except for the matter of the lorry driver, or did you miss that mister....oh...mister fancy coat and silly hat.
Sherlock: What is wrong with my coat?
Dirk: The coat....I forgot the coat. Can your brother fly us to the Seychelles? First class, its important.

And there's something inexplicable about Cumberbatch's face I just don't....like.
