I assume he sought to disprove it because they were in a relationship. Asexuals being in relationships can be a hard thing for people to wrap their heads around.

My sister is an asexual. Always has been, always will be. But as such, she isn't interested in even starting relationships. She has strong, meaningful friendships without physical/sexual contact. She's entirely happy being this way.

Also, it sounds to me like the characters were happy enough without people fucking around in their sex lives. Two people can be great partners without a sex life, and it sounds to me like those two had it. If they weren't seeking help and didn't want it, it's fucking insulting for anyone to meddle in it.
