But yeah, with tumblr and stuff, most of my friends have some idea about fandom. I think they always did: at any high school, there are kids who are into anime and Harry Potter and obsess over bands or whatever and they're bound to find fanfiction. It's to a different degree than me and we're into different stuff, but I think it was kind of naive of me to think that fandom was my own exclusive domain- pretty much everyone is a fan of something, and a lot of people will Google that thing pretty damn hard. That's not to say that talking about fic and shipping and whatnot is *~mainstream~* yet, but I've seen fanfic talked about on telivision as a geek thing and stuff.
Despite that, it is weird. I know EXACTLY what you mean about the casual fan vs. the fannish mc fanfan thing, and it's especially weird when I know about the fandom as we at fandomsecrets would define fandom when the other person is more into the show itself. Like, I don't love Glee nearly as much as my friends, but I probably know more about the online fandom then they do.
