It was never openly acknowledged in BBC Sherlock canon that he's asexual, but there's this exchange in the first episode sounds very familiar to most aces who were asked if they were in a relationship http://vimeo.com/15893769
To Sherlock, sexual relationships are just distractions, and aside from his brief (intellectual) attraction to Irene Adler, he's refreshingly free of love interest in the series. The show opened up a discussion of asexuality everywhere (because wow, a male lead with no love interest! Shocking!).
While there are some people who claim the he's just repressed and hasn't found the right person (sound familiar, yeah?), most of the fandom educated themselves and incorporate Sherlock's asexuality in fics, even when he's paired up (usually with Watson, of course). Some of the fics makes me so happy and hopeful, because their sexless yet loving relationship is exactly what I hoped for to have but never dared to dream, and the thought that some people gets it is encouraging.

I have never encountered asexual fics anywhere in any fandoms, it's really exhilarating to find so many here.

*shakes head* It's a really nice change to hear that. I don't even know if I'm ace, but... the Supernatural fandom is very, very pairing-oriented (not to mention, it has lots of porn into the bargain). There are some really, really odd pairings. I mean, people can write what they want, obviously, but sometimes it feels like the 'just friends' fics (particularly Dean and Castiel) get lost in all the pairing up.

Sherlock, otoh has many pairing fics, true, but they also have an abundance of case fics and friendships fics are aplenty, and most of them are well written. I couldn't remember the last time I enjoyed reading fics so much.
