I've actually been pretty lucky when it comes to the one RL person I know who turned out to (still) be in fandom. I might have learned from previous mistakes and sort of slowly brought up stuff and she was always quick to jump on it. We don't always share the same fandoms and she's way less into it than I am.
I've actually had some bad experiences with meeting online fans in RL. Not that they turned out to be nasty, just that we didn't click. We'd get along great online, but face to face it would be awkward because we had very little in common otherwise, things like that.
Then there are times when you get along, but you experience fandom completely differently. I have this experience at conventions. I like certain characters, pairings. I like to read fanfiction, maybe have a discussion once in a while. Other people don't ship at all, they cosplay, collect merchandise, whatever. There's no right or wrong way to do fandom, but you've got to find someone who's a bit compatible if you're going to hang out.
